Hi folks,
What do you recon is going on here? 2 foxes in London N8,around midday today, one seems to be bonkers. Not sure if distressed or just playing. Seems to be itchy maybe? Mange?

It keeps scratching the same spot. Might also be a tick or an injury.
Looks like a third fox is barely visible under the shrubbery in the lower right corner.

Anyone know what a fox is trying to say when it does that screeching thing? We cannot agree in the office some people think its 'fuck me' others think its 'fuck off' anyone help us clear things up.

Right first time....

Thanks, my colleague said it was the latter with such conviction. He is an idiot though.

It sounds like a problem that foxed you badly.

Refusing to skulk about it.

One of my colleagues piped up the other day and says the author of 'Gaspard the fox' used to work at my company. Tempted to get the book for the kids but Gaspard? Would have thought Barry or Dave but Gaspard... Also just saw the neighbour stroking the local fox again saying 'good girl' appears she has established quite a friendship with this one. Interesting how they get close to some people.

And back in 2015, this happened.

Great shot! We had foxes doing it on our shed roof the other night. And it’s not a flat shed roof either, It’s got a 45 degree pitch?! At least they were safe off the ground (top of pitch is 3m). Our dog was going crazy indoors! :)

I'm guessing 'that screeching thing' sounds like a baby being murdered?
If so, that's a vixen's scream, which means "I'm ready to copulate". It's designed to travel far and wide to the local dog foxes and is heard late winter/early spring.
We never hear it here in Hackney, but we have a local dog fox which has plaintively repeated his call of 'hup hup hup' (kind of like a bark, kinda not) for years. This can be either searching for a mate or a territory marking noise, but we suspect the former given that we've never heard a vixen's scream.

There was/were definitely (a) vixen(s) here in Upper Clapton last year. I don't think I've heard one this winter, though.

Ha!
How did this end??

Scaredy-fox ran off. Ballsy cat.

I thought so.
That fox really needs to work on getting his hair up. Posture also looks a bit half-assed if you ask me. -

Saw the neighbour I mentioned up thread with a fox on a harness type lead today. Walking her dog at the same time. Had to double take but was definitely a fox.

Blimey.

10/10 to the cat for the full-on scary Dimetrodon look. Don’t blame the fox for dipping out.

Wow, please get a photo if you can!

wow this whole thread is insane. I've seen maybe 3 foxes in my entire life and never ever in an urban environment.
We've got one that likes to hang around on our windowsill
