I appreciate there are a lot of people out there who are being a bit bleeding heart about this, and who are confecting outrage, but they should know that those lives matter too. All lives matter.”

An Australian politician who is a bit racist playing to the racist element in the country? Surely not.
That article is a trove of awesome politician bollocks though.. like this one:
On Thursday, Morrison defended his MPs’ right to “freedom of speech” in the context of misinformation about the US election result, including Christensen’s unfounded claims that Biden benefited from “dodgy votes”.
Wonder how Morrison is going to go when Biden moves into the WH if he's saying crap like that. Probably about as well as Boris.

He'll curl up at Biden's feet and wag his tail like a good boy

Some good reflection here https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jan/12/australian-conservatives-go-to-extraordinary-lengths-to-deny-the-reality-of-rightwing-extremism
Morrison's never been elected, and with the mood in the global arena swinging against trumpism it might well be that he won't get another term. That said, the opposition guy doesn't strike me as someone that captures the imagination of the voters either.

From my casual observer viewpoint and being there in the last elections, I think it's rare to see so many uninspiring politicians. It's almost like a political class was created when the UK was in charge that was so locally/personally focused that they've given up on bigger picture/greater good politics. There's so much banana republic stuff going on when you read the papers there that it's mad. Either that or they look at politicians from yesteryear, decide those guys were popular and spout/do the same stuff that seemed progressive or just normal 30 years ago.

Does he mean concocting? If I was going to say something about a global coup as a head of state I might use spellcheck.

For years the gun lobby’s whole raison d’etre is that citizens owning huge numbers or weapons is necessary to ensure that they could overthrow a despotic government should one arise. Now Trump, Q-anon and Facebook rumours have convinced a worrying number of Americans that the Biden Administration is that government. They’ve been prepared for this eventuality for years, I worry where it is going to end, short and long-term.

Whilst making my coffee this morning I somehow thought about the amazing 1987 film Dragnet, starring Tom Hanks and an on form Dan Akroyd. I couldn’t help but think that whoever came up with this QAnon crap may have watched it one too many times, and failed to grasp the film was actually a parody.
From wiki:
The trail leads Friday and Streebek to a cult calling itself P.A.G.A.N. (People Against Goodness and Normalcy), and they focus on member Emil Muzz, who also works as Caesar's limousine driver. Under interrogation, Muzz reveals the time and place of a secret ceremony. Friday and Streebek sneak in, disguised as members, and witness a masked leader using several of the stolen items in a ritual leading up to a virgin sacrifice. The leader throws the victim, Connie Swail, into a pit of water with an anaconda. Friday and Streebek disrupt the ritual, saving Connie and subduing the snake, and report the incident to their boss Captain Bill Gannon. However, when Gannon and Police Commissioner Jane Kirkpatrick (who is running for mayor) visit the site with them the next day, no evidence of the ritual can be found. Kirkpatrick removes Friday and Streebek from the case.
Streebek gets a tip on the whereabouts of a load of chemicals stolen by P.A.G.A.N. that can be used to mass-produce a toxic gas. He and Friday lead a SWAT team to raid the location, which proves to be an ordinary milk factory; the chemicals and gas-making equipment are actually hidden next door. With no further leads to follow, Streebek tags along on a birthday dinner for Friday and his grandmother, and Connie soon joins them at Friday's invitation. During dinner, Connie identifies Whirley (at another table with Gannon and Kirkpatrick) as the P.A.G.A.N. leader. Friday attempts to arrest Whirley, but Kirkpatrick overrules him and relieves him of duty. Gannon takes Friday's badge and gun and orders Streebek to stay away from Whirley.
As Friday takes Connie home, they are captured by Muzz and taken to the Griffith Observatory, where Whirley reveals to them his plan to kill Caesar at a reunion party for the models of Bait. He has his men take Connie to his private jet and prepares to kill Friday, but Streebek arrives just in time, having forced Muzz to reveal Friday's whereabouts at gunpoint. Streebek infiltrates Caesar's mansion and disrupts the P.A.G.A.N. plans to release the gas made from the stolen chemicals, and Friday leads a SWAT team raid. Whirley sets fire to the stolen magazines and later escapes in the confusion. Gannon reinstates Friday and returns his badge so he can pursue Whirley.

You’ve got to remember that this is a small and vocal minority. The vast majority of Americans don’t want this and you’ve got to hope that they come through in the end.
But the Republicans need to get a fucking grip and fast, otherwise the beast they’ve tried to ride is going to be unleashed.
