  • Wondered why I couldn't load replies/RTs. Still had it cached.

Edit: Ahh @jameo beat me to it.

  • As @Jaap pointed out to me, you can quite clearly see a cable. So definitely not wireless. Maybe that's why it was deleted.

  • Could be the semi wireless one reported? Wires between battery and derailleurs, wireless to the shifters. Looks a lot like 9100 to me?
    zoom & enhance

  • That’s 9100 for sure

  • The current gen 105 r7020 hydro groupset doesn't have a post mount option it seems.

Say I buy the groupset with flat mount calipers, I can simply swap them out for older post mount calipers? There's no weird compatibility issue or anything?

I'm pretty sure I can do it since I done the reverse with red etap, went from post mount to flat mount.

Just need to be sure there's no issue. Any advice appreciated ta

  • Not totally the same, but I put Hope RX4s on Ultegra R8020 STIs as I needed post mount, & they've been fine, no compatibility issues. Shouldn't imagine there'd be an issue.

  • I had a similar issue. People suggested that some Shimano MTB calipers will play nicely. I don't know if it's all of them or what.
But I went with Hope like Gideon

  • Ah yeah I'd forgot about those hope calipers. Good shout.

I had the old R685 Shifter with R785 caliper at one point and remember that the caliper was essentially an mtb XT caliper.

I just wasn't sure if the current gen Shifters had changed in anyway that meant they weren't compatible. But if the hope calipers still work then an old post mount shimano caliper should do the trick. Thanks all

  • It can't be wireless as per SRAM derailleurs because of SRAM patents. So Shimano will have to use a different approach .. the semi wireless one ?

  • I'm sure SRAM would consider a licensing agreement.

  • I'm pretty sure that they wouldn't since this is what has stopped Shimano from going fully wireless. Its not in the interest of SRAM to licence to Shimano since it would obviously eat SRAM sales if Shimano could produce a fully wireless groupset.

As far as I know SRAM have patents not on wireless derailleurs as such but rather patents on derailleurs that have built in removable batteries placed on the derailleur thus enabling the wireless aspect.
It does seem ridiculous that such a thing can be patented. Imagine Sony tried to stop other brands using wireless TV remotes.

But it's highly unlikely that SRAM are going to license the patents to anyone else, especially Shimano.

I have 11 speed etap on my road bike and Eagle AXS on one of my mountain bikes. Eagle AXS is good but its not perfect. Its downfall is the cassette, it's pretty clunky, especially shifting up under even a tiny bit of power. Once my cassette is done in I'm going to use a 12 speed Shimano cassette and chain with the AXS mech.

I think if Shimano released a wireless mtb groupset tomorrow a lot of people, me included, would switch over from SRAM and I think SRAM know this.

  • I can't help but feel Andy's comment was tongue in cheek.....

  • I've done a bit of mixing and matching on a few people's bikes and it all works fine, my bike has GRX to deore 4pots.

  • Best check the Shimano compatibility chart but IIRC you can use the latest road shifters with the latest MTB postmount calipers and they all use a BH90 hose. The older road 785 postmount calipers use BH59 hoses yet people seem to have been mixing them with newer shifters without any issue.

If you buy a full shifter set (with hoses and flatmount caliper) and intend to use a MTB caliper then not only will you need to sell the calipers but there's a good chance the hoses won't be compatible too - you'll likely need a hose with a banjo connector on if you buy MTB calipers.

You may find it cheaper to buy the parts individually but few shops online are selling each bit individually.

I recently went through it all. I bought GRX shifters, SLX calipers, and the correct hoses and connectors all from German shops (bikediscount, bike24).

  • hose with a banjo connector

Yeah good shout, I realised this earlier. All the MTB calipers use a banjo connection. From memory my old 785 calipers didn't have a banjo connection. So to avoid buying new hoses too, I'd ideally get a second hand pair of 785 calipers.

This is just for a winter hack bike, in an ideal world I'd find someone selling the older RS685-RS785 shifter/caliper combo. But it could take a while waiting for some to show up.

  • Deore don't use a banjo.

  • Ah right thanks, I didn't realise this!
Thats annoying, I had a set of Deore brakes that I sold a while back for cheap. Shudda kept em

  • Obviously get some new 4pot calipers and have all the power.

  • I run 7020 shifters with 785 calipers, no problem

  • Finding a GRX 600 1x 40T chainring in UK at the moment is nearly impossible it seems.. Anyone know why? Anyone has a spare one to sell me?

  • Does Chorus 12sp hydraulic actually exist? There appears to be none of it.

  • Anyone know why?

There's a huge shortage in components, due to covid increasing demand and impacting supply.
