Looks like a thread tension issue.
Here's a resource for getting the correct tension - it worked on my machine

Tension is likely but also look at the hook timing, since it looks like you have skipped stitches on the top and bunching on the bottom.
-
• #655
Is this related to your use of mismatched threads?
-
• #656
I've adjusted both the tension and the hook timing, but that doesnt mean either are right
Yes, using mismatched threads, but this isnt that uncommon a thing. There seems to be a very narrow window where everything aligns correctly.

this isnt that uncommon a thing
by which I mean the bunching, not me using mismatched threads

Have you tried a different needle?
-
• #659
I break needles quite a lot - sewing thicker items like denim, webbing, leather etc
Not sure what needle is in at the moment but it's one of the ones I usually use. Thicker rather than a spindly little one.
I'll have another go at setting it up correctly

Was there meant to be a link here?

Make sure your needle is well matched to the thread as well, I’ve had issues with that before.

What machine are you using? What foot? What bobbin plate if there is more than one type on your machine? What brand and type of needles? Demin should be 110/18 - 130/21
The cheaper needles break with a higher frequency than the more expensive ones ime.

Pretty pleased with how it turned out. Didn't have to buy anything, used up a load of scraps and found a way to do some very minor recycling.

Thank you! It was way easier than a second set of pockets and meant I could position it once the flap was attached.

Very small fry projects these, but have been really enjoying learning over the last couple of weeks, just using waste fabric from my aunt's garage so far (these were with a roll of old deckchair material and some nice herringbone webbing). Finally did a materials order a few days ago so excited to get onto some more complex projects soon. Wondering if anybody has any patterns or guides they've used that they wouldn't mind sharing? Would be keen to try anything. Cheers!

Oh nice one, thank you – these are great

^ That deckchair is very handsome material, good find!

Thank you! No I made my own, but it's definitely easier to work out what will and won't work after following a few patterns. I used the bike packing . com ones that Kurai linked for my first attempts

Yup, only just strong enough but makes it easy to open one handed
Yes, should be ok.
Had to do this for top stitching sometimes.
