What not-quite-CX tyre comes recommended for the UK winter? I've got clearance for 40mm (with mud), wanted the Vittoria Wets in 38mm but no-one has stock.

Fit first in comparison to spesh or giro vr90 ?
Heel lift and rub plus are they wide or narrow? -

This is the gravel content that I want to see

I also have some Sidi Drakos, 4-5 years old and still going strong.
No heel lift or rub. There’s an adjustable heel grip on the back which you can dial in to fit. I have widish feet and either 42.5 mega or 43 regular fit me well - have tended to go with the 43s as a bit more room for thicker winter socks when needed. I haven’t used specialised in a long time because I found their shoes too narrow for me. Never ridden giros so can’t compare those.

That definitely looks like the wrong kind of mud.

It’s OK guys Rene Herse has the solution ...

Is this about the 'ride a horse' comment?
Horses will be huge for autumn/winter 2021, just you wait.

To stop me being tempted back into the mud this will be my winter bike for the foreseeable. With a GRX 2x setup this could easily be the only bike I need.

schwalbe x-one ?

I've just gone from Resolute to Nano, and I'm preferring the Nano, they've been great in the slop and they're fast rolling on the road.

Schwalbe X-ONE
You’re Bristol now? We have at least one at MUD DOCK

Thanks for that! I might try a pair of the lace up privateers then. I broke my foot a couple of years ago and it's not been the same since, any shoes I've tried with super stiff soles have just left it in agony after a while.

Try some Rapha Explore. They have a carbon sole but only 2/3 and so walk very well.
They converted me to lace ups and fit well in the ankle but have a spacious toe so thicker socks still leave a nice space around the front of the foot. -

Yeah! X-ones are only in 33mm right? I've got regular cross mud tyres but am looking for a bit more cushion for the ATB trails as there's no racing this year. Maybe the G-One Ultrabite is the one.

You definitely need narrower tyres for this time of the year..
EDIT: Just saw this had been said already

I met a guy some years ago that was mule-packing the same route I was bikepacking in Montenegro.. It's definitely a thing (again)

They look great actually! I really can't afford to spank that sort of money on a pair of shoes though, even if I was 100% sure I'd get on with them.

i suppose MK is grim when rona isn't on, but when it is? what else you gonna do than ride 100k or more of mud for entertainment.
Narrow tyres, you'll cut straight through it 😎.
