Bet the owners of that field basically named their price to the government

Not with Compulsory Purchase. They will be given market value, if they're lucky.

I thought there was still ability to argue though. Back when the Ctrl was being built the government compulsory purchased our house because it was going to take 1ft off our garden. My parents were able to negotiate a slightly higher price due to modifications made.
