Do they actually contribute massively to the economy?
I think the most recent figures showed the crown estate and direct tax receipts netted about £600m profit to the taxpayer. That's just the direct contributions. The indirect stuff is subject to debate but I doubt they are far off a billion a year to the economy.
I can't be arsed to look it up but I think the Sovereign Grant, what the taxpayer pays to the monarchy, is less than £100m.
Edit: missed the graphic that not4sale posted. £1.7bn in, £100m out.
Quite apart from the perfectly valid reason to fuck them all off because the actual idea of a monarchy is ridiculous and outdated and being born into ruling is bullshit. Do they actually contribute massively to the economy? They're pretty bloody costly for the most part and and money from duchies could still be made, houses could still be visited, moreso when they're not occupied a few weeks a year, tat with their faces on could still be sold, imagine the cash boost with all the plates sold with the final royal faces on. Could even have them separated from their bodies, but if not it wouldn't cost much to give them a council house each and a couple of years minimum wage and send them on their way, then we'd save millions and still have all the other stuff. Then if they end up being a non sweaty paedo in the process of their harmless, weird lives, they'll hopefully get more than a little telling off after a TV car crash.
