I've not found that to be a problem, but Harley offer their knits in a standard Shetland as well as a brushed finish.
Unless it's just being worn outdoors, I find anything thicker than a submariner needs to be a cardigan or easily removable. I've got a Black Sheep Knitwear shawl cardigan that's great; if their jumpers are equally heavyweight they'd deal with all but the very worst weather.

I use mine over merino undershirts in winter, which in turn are covered by my work jacket while on the job (driver) or an old Canadian army parka while out and about. I'll add a down-filled sweater if it's really cold.
I find wool sweaters on their own in moderate temps just let too much air through, I need a wind layer.
I’ve gotten one from Outdoor Knitwear before, didn’t quite get on with it. I think I was hoping for something thicker.
Got Harley bookmarked, but the hairiness puts me off a bit, snagfest waiting to happen IMV.
