Which Groupset?

  • a genuine which groupset question;

what is the cheapest way to get an electronic hydro disc groupset at the moment? i am aiming to build up a winter bike but it must be electronic shifting + hydro disc. fine with mid-range calipers and crankset etc.. it would likely be for a kinesis 4S disc roadset. it could be 1x11/12 if that makes it cheaper/easier to get hold of. aware that everywhere seems out of stock of everything atm

  • Just buy 105 and make the click-bbrrssshb sounds yourself when you shift, stick a powerbank in your sestpost powering a small LED lighting up the inside of the frame that you should charge every month or so and Watt's your uncle.

  • i'm just fed up of cable shifting in winter. first world problem i know but it really irks me this time of year.. bike washing all the time; sloppy shifting which feels numb... cables need replacing or greasing plus indexing every couple of months... summer bike will remain mechanical DA disc (currently riding said summer bike through winter for the second time and getting frustrated)

  • Stop washing it, make the noises.

  • Cheapest way would be to buy a used groupset I guess. Or buying parts over time.

I have some old R785 levers, for example. If you found all the parts you need over time at lowest prices, that's the cheapest. Most people don't have the patience for that though.

If you mean retail cheapest, well then that depends where you are, what stores have what you need in stock, etc.

  • Yeah this is very true. I sold an entire Di2 ultegra groupset with r785s and flat mount brakes with etubes for $475. All he had to do was reviews it and reinstall olives and barbs.

  • trp hylex brakes with shift buttons and a 1x11 di2 derailleur ? grx or xt.
That's my plan for my next 'gravel' upgrade

  • I don't think Shimano make the SW-R600 climbing shifters any more so stock is becoming harder to find.

Added: Upgrade Bikes only have two of each the right hand and left hand conversion kits in stock too.

  • My S-Works road bike that's still going strong cost half that.

    How old is it?

  • agreed - just seems said used groupsets and individual parts are very low in supply and/or fucking pricey at the moment..

which shimano groupset should i be looking at? i seem to have lost my way massively with the different generations

  • just replaced my rd inner cable (last replaced in july after snapping). seems the shittily designed giant-tcr specific gromit for the frame at the headtube had perished quite badly, causing loads of water ingress and friction. have bodged with some other gromit for now

    bikes... RAGE!!!

  • cycling's a stupid hobby

  • need a "cycling's a stupid hobby" sticker and/or tattoo tbh

  • Yeah of course, because wasn't there a Shimano factory issue (I can't remember - fire or something?) and then Covid dried up all the used stuff with everyone doing more cycling.

  • Cycling is great. Modern bikes are less great.

But just look at the tech now compared to 10-20 years ago - great brakes, di2 is lovely, GPS makes exploring and stuff wonderful, lights are fuckloads better, gear ranges are huge, yada yada

  • hippy pls

  • :-*

  • Hi all, I currently run a Shimano 105 5700 STI Triple 10 Speed Road on my Bob Jackson World Tour. Given the frame is cracked, currently looking at options to repair.

Given all the components are pretty worn and old, now is a good time to swap out - especially if they're coming off the frame anyway to weld and paint.

Is it possible to change to a 1x setup? I'm using a Shimano 105 5700 10 Speed Cassette Silver 12-27. Not keen on replacing the wheel so not sure if I max out at 10 (or 11?)

If not a 1x setup, then what about a 2x?

  • 1x is not that great on road bikes. Get newest Shimano 105 in 2x, it's way better than 10 speed

  • Do you know if the newest Shimano 105 in 2x will work with the STI Triple shifters? I'm guessing no as my shifters are only 10 speed and will have to change not only the shifters but the derailleur as well.

The question really is if I can change from the triple I have to the front to a 2x setup? trying to minimise parts to swap.

  • 14 years

14 years ago, it was insanely expensive.

  • You can have a 1x10 set up, by going for an MTB derailleur and wider range cassette even up to 11-42t, the jump between each cog will be noticeable on the road.

I’d go for modern Tiagra (way better than old 105), or even Sora, as the modern stuff have a much wider choice of gearing with 11-34t being the max.

With the Tiagra groupset, you can actually run 11-40t with a double if you opt for a long cage modern 105 R7000 with a Tiagra 4700.

  • No, no it wasn't. If I thought inflation was the only factor I'd not have bothered mentioning it. It was a good deal at the time and for a whole bike not just the frameset.

For another comparison, my S-Works Shiv from 2013 also cost half what that gravel frameset costs.

This is also a gravel frame. Something that should be getting flogged around trails, not shuttled to races in a car like road bikes and it's not like they developed it for the UCI gravel worlds...

  • Look around for the first generation di2 hydro shifters - rs785 - pair with a grx or long cage di2 mech. depending on frame you can probably get calipers for 120ish. as @hippy said, waiting for parts to show up over time is cheaper - otherwise things like junction boxes and batteries eat up a lot of the budget. also, some good deals to be had on etap axs - with just shifters and 1 rear mech it might be cheaper - i believe you can swap out the jockey wheels to run a non-flattop chain and cassette (and avoid the expense of a freehub).
