And a nicely written description of what mutations are and what they might mean for us - https://coronavirusexplained.ukri.org/en/article/cad0013/

Dang, sorry to hear that. For what it’s worth we’d all be in a much worse place if people like you hadn’t stuck to the rules.
Also for what it’s worth, we’ve moved our family Christmas festivities forward to January or whenever we’re next able to gather. We’ll open gifts via Skype and play games on the 25th, then have our meal when we can, because even if we haven’t seen each other since March right now the most important thing is keeping safe.
Edit for brevity

Holy Fuck.
"... and that's how the new variant reached the North just ahead of Christmas, overwhelming the hospitals throughout January 2021. Lockdown measures hit Tier 7 in April and remained that way until late 2022."

Harriet’s thread is weird. Still has the audacity to blame the Gov and seemingly not take any responsibility for her actions?

feel like an absolute mug for following the rules all year
This is exactly how I feel. Have done more than follow the rules all year. Then Christmas came along, so we made plans above and beyond the rules to minimise the risk. This is our reward.
I can't tell you what to do, you've got to decide that for yourself, but fuck judging people in your situation.

Yeah. Similar.
I've not stopped working all year, NHS stuff.
Not visited family, live on my own, no fucking life all year. And on the eve of Xmas this?
Haven't seen my Mum since March, see lives alone too. Didn't visit due to my high risk work. Yet she picked up the virus in late September but is OK, no long covid symptoms.
I didn't visit before that because I was scared of giving it to her.
Now? She's immune. I want to actually hug someone for once in 9 months.
But I feel so fucking guilty about it. For my mental health I so want to do it. For work I feel like it's a betrayal.

This all makes threatening Greenwich Council with legal action if they switched to online learning for the last week before the Christmas break seem like the cuntish vindictive dick move it was. I say this as the partner of a teacher with covid symptoms since yesterday, who otherwise hasn’t had a day off since schools reopened and who struggled to get a test today because everyone wanted a test in time for Xmas.

her way of getting revenge on those Scots who dared to move away

It's more likely an attempt to slow the spread of the virus.

Looking at belgium france and spanish news non of them are mentioning a new virulent strain but are tightening travel restrictions.
Our Gov is using it as an excuse for this latest U turn. It helps to save a little face.

To be fair, several other countries have done this ahead of the UK.
Italy for example: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-europe-55372491
Some people here make it sound like the UK is uniquely fucked. It's not.

Well fuck my o-zone.
Absolutely astounding ignorance. "Maximum damage guaranteed." and yet still traveling just to spend xmas with her mum.I just cant believe people could be so fucking stupid to travel from London of all places.

I’m a sucker for actively looking for things that will make me angry every now and again, I think Julia Hartley-brewers latest tweet might be one of the best I’ve ever found.

Johnson stood in Parliament on Wednesday and accused Starmer of wanting to cancel Christmas and saying that was an unimaginable thing to suggest. He then did a briefing that evening on National TV saying it would be inhumane to ask people to cancel Christmas plans and here we are, he deserves all the criticism thrown at him, he is more interested in being loved than governing

Far from emulating Churchill, Johnson becomes the new Cromwell.
Came across this really interesting website showing all the documented genomic variants of Covid-19
https://nextstrain.org/ncov/global
As you can see mutations are common. The variant in southern England will be one of the pale lime ones in line 20B. I can't find it on the chart now, but I think that it was first recorded in September (?) and consisted of 4 nucleotide mutations.
