I recently bought a pair of Continental tyres - a German brand we are all familiar with, and these came with plenty of German on the packaging, but in small print were the words 'made in China'.
It seems that all Continental tyre production has moved to China. I don't feel happy about this because:
I feel that Continental is falsely trying to claim the prestige of a German made product, and even if the Chinese made product is satisfactory from a quality point of view there seems to me to be an element of dishonesty here.
A further point is that the movement of production of any manufactured item seems to be part of a false claim by European countries to be cleaning up their industries. But what's happening is that they are just exporting their pollution to the far east, which is more like the wild west so far as environmental control is concerned.
But the most serious objection is that the Chinese state is involved in racial persecution and possibly genocide of the Uighers, and if that wasn't enough, the use of slave labour - see this article:
If the Nazi regime had survived long enough to sell us cars, would you have been happy to buy a 'Strength through Joy car' (KdF Wagen) , that is, a Beetle?
Continental, yes but which continent?
