Ah nice. Everyone has there own way of progressing but literally every board shop in Newquay steered me away from buying a more expensive mini mal and pushed me toward a cheaper foamie. The shop i got my board in said they'd happily buy it back when i wanted to move up but they also noted most people hold onto them because they're really good for crap surf days. FWIW i got 2 weeks solid surf in Newquay over the summer and never once thought i wish i had a smaller better board!
Good luck going out this Christmas, i did new years day this year and with all the gear on you'll be fine. That said lookout for lifeguard protection over the Christmas break if like me you're not a strong swimmer. I got caught in a rip tide and definitely would of appreciated some help!
I went with an Olaian 900 series foam board from Decathlon when it was on sale! It's kind of perfect for a beginner but obviously not the sexiest bit of kit, I'd rather have supported a local shop but provided lockdown plays ball I'll try and get lots of surfs in in the coming year and then maybe treat myself to something nice from a local builder come summer!
I also bought a Srface 4/3 wetsuit and some Needessentials boots, gloves and a hood which I've not been able to use yet due to lockdown restrictions but planning a few Christmas surf trips at the moment!
