Well, perhaps she will be true to her word and the bottom 25% of wealth and income (usually non white) will be uplifted and poverty will disappear cos it has nothing to do with fashionable characteristics...
...some people genuinely make that argument btw, I don't buy it, but surely if they actually tackle this by investing in the poorer areas and resolve the poverty then it is a good thing.
"greater control over their lives though" by giving them money so they have a choice? offer cheap business credit? end foodbanks? Probably not...
She missed a trick: No mention of ignoring disability...but it seems they don't want to go that low as the culture wars dare not touch the disabled...
-
• #62884
You can choose not to be disabled perhaps?
-
• #62885
That's clearly where people with disabilities have been going wrong - they've just not wanted not to be disabled enough.
-

I will elaborate more on this in my inspirational TED talk. Stay tuned.

That Liz Truss article would sort of make sense if it wasn't from a Tory minister who has proven to be inept at everything. As @JWestland said, lifting people out of poverty starting at the absolute poorest would be a fine goal if she actually meant it rather than just as a cheap attack.

Touch? They don’t even acknowledged them.
-
• #62889
Yep but I think because she wants to please the "culture warriors" here. If she would try to make a point "disabled people just need to be more responsible" it won't go down well.
Quite happy to have a go at LGBT and gender equality, but they won't sink that low.
Of course PIP is not working for many people and completely fails people with mental health issues / people that look "too good".

I am doubtful this chat about "individualism" and "just work hard" goes together with actual equality... but even Milton Friedman was in favor of having work pay, but genuinely make it pay.
Tories tho. They probably implement only his bad ideas again.

The couple were arrested and charged, and woman who was at an interview was, correctly, arrested and then the charges were dropped by the judge.
That's not to say that the couple avoiding jail isn't disgusting, but it is a bit disingenuous to compare them. Unless you are comparing the mugshot vs smiling photos?
Them avoiding jail gets even more unbelieveable if you read the transcripts....

Why was the interviewing mother arrested? She was only 30 feet away. Should have been just:
Q: "are these your kids?"
A: "yes I'm at an interview, I can see them, it's fine"
Q: " oh ok have a nice day" -

Top 10 news articles on BBC this morning had one about a couple of ex-pats are starting a podcast, and another was "George Clooney: Tom Cruise didn't overreact"
Unsure how either are news worth, let alone the top read.

To further the discussion re. nasty Tory female ministers, unashamed bully PP is back on the case about grassing-up ones mates:
-
• #62897
Is it still grassing up if she's asked for her opinion on something that happened?
Surely grassing up would require her spilling the beans on the dinner he attended, as opposed to answering a question on her opinion of Ellwood's actions by a journalist.
-
• #62898
There is a bit of background though - there were a few articles (ES was one, can't remember the others) a couple of weeks ago suggesting that she was one of the 'toxic' members of the cabinet and suggesting, among others, Ellwood as 'one for the future'. I doubt she shied away from the answer, but maybe the journo was thinking they'd get a printable reaction when they asked.
-
• #62899
Boris also mentioned Ellwood's business dinner.
Remember that he got appointed instead of Failing Grayling for the defense committee...which is the candidate Boris wanted.
-
• #62900
Fair enough, no idea about the context involved! Still think labelling it as 'grassing up' is a bit too far. Dangerous territory making up accusations to the point that the actual valid ones become diluted.
Fuck you, pay me.
