  • Eek, I hope not.
On the suspension fork point - what happens when it needs servicing exactly? Coming from someone who's only ever had road bikes

  • Hmm, ones I found were 45mm.

Think I've found them on Bike24 anyway.

  • If it's the same SR Suntour coil fork they've been using for years, you can service the lowers super easily without any special tools and seals/wipers are readily available. Doing this about once a year is plenty.

  • Cheers, looks odd for sure.

  • Dutch vampire transporters.

  • Got around to it quicker than I expected I would. It's detachable, will have hinges and latches, and is sturdy as can be. Needs some finishing trim to cover the staples and horrendous, rushed carpentry. Will work wonderfully for the winter. Kids should be happy.

  • wow thats amazing! I wish I was a real man :(

  • What mudguard is that?

    @lowbrows

I think you are most impressed with the box which I bought. I was referring only to the canopy. Which has no plans and is 30 gauge marine vinyl, some two buck pine all held together with screws and staples. Not a work of art.

The box called the Holde Box from Splendid Cycles and is laser cut birchwood. There ain't no way I could do that on my own. It's really badass, and is held together with one truck strap. The sides pop off and it turns into a flatbed in about 45 seconds. Theres a seat with a cushion, and seat belts. Very utilitarian very sturdy very tough.

  • Its part of the bullitt Groupset- but I can't see further spec on web or on the guard, and they don't seem to have it as an accessory.

  • Suspension forks on cargo you only really see on kid carriers, where the weight is mostly going to be between bike + rider (50 to 100kg) + kiddo or two (15 to 40kg). Even at those extremes of load only an air sprung fork can deal with that range.
Beyond that yeah, utility bikes don't have or need forks, most brands have tried and either gone back to big tyres or just put extra money in the warranty pot for all the failures.
Never seen a upto 2019 ua or r+m with fork that has more than 1000 miles on it not have terminal levels of play in the fork bush's. They tried a new one in 2019/20 but not seen any in the workshop or in the real world yet. Just keep the receipt and change fork just before end of warranty ;)

New load looks ace for kiddo carry, there's a German new brand called cago/cado? That are going to make something similar, probably add another 1k to the price though!

  • Velo Orange is now selling fender sets for 20"/26" cargo bikes.

Very excited to never have to trim and re-radius 26" to fit a 20" again.

  • Cool pic! My grandfather used to work with a bike like that before and during WW2. Maintenance and repairs on the phone network. According to the few stories my father had (my grandfather was forbidden to talk about the war by my grandmother) he used to distribute food and foodcoupons (bonnen) with it to people in hiding.

  • That's wild to see real connections to these historical photos, thanks for chiming in!

  • Does anyone have any experience of the cargo bags by Bagaboo? The HPA ones look better but are out of stock

  • This is currently for sale at barnes bikes in Putney, think they’re asking 1,500 which seems a bit steep.

  • Putney

    Middle-class tax?

TBH that doesn't seem that unreasonable for a new (?) Bakfiets, depending on the spec.

  • Ah, ok; looks in decent nick. With the rain cover it's over £2K new, and they hold their value reasonably well. Maybe a little on the punchy side, but not outrageous.

  • First proper testrun! Only issue is that my second hand Alfine 8speed backwheel needs som service to shift smooth. Now I need to stop pedaling for it to change gears.

  • Have you ridden an Alfine / hub gear before? You cannot just mash on the pedals and change gear, you need to momentarily take the pressure off the pedals for it to shift smooth

  • No its my first time. Ok thanks for the tip. I think it needs some service anyway, Im thinking about doing the dip-in-oil treatment. Any suggestions to what more that I can do with it?
