  • Any ice/snow runners here? Thinking about starting up again but it’s been about 6 years and I now live in Scandinavia. Are those ice bugs shoes worth the cost?

  • Not speaking from personal experience but my two friends who compete in the sky runner world series and who run through alpine winters at over 2,000m wear normal summer trail shoes when running on snow and ice.

    I do maybe 5 to 10 runs on snow and/or ice each year and just wear my Asics mud shoes. Im sure specialist shoes are grippier but most of the trick to running on ice is balance rather than shoe traction in my limited experience.

  • I tried to think about cadence on my run tonight. Tried keep my knees high and my feet kicking up. It was quite an effort though. I think cadence will be more relevant when I can run faster

  • I use Walsh PB Ultra for icey runs. Same ones I use for lite XC and fell running

  • Ok thanks, that’s good to know it’s possible. Where I am (pretty far north) sees a lot of thaw and freeze these days (global warming is real) so it’s a lot of wet sheet ice .

  • Foot pain update.

    Insoles mean days are pain free, but I was waking up with pain at start of days. I got these to sleep in and am pain free in the morning now too.

    I think this just means the pressure on the nerve is relieved constantly so there's no pain, but the neuroma hasn't gone away.

    I'm going for a short headtorch run in a bit to celebrate either way.

  • I’ve ordered some quick laces. They’re a bit too long. Should I just cut them and singe the ends?

  • In need of some advice please!

    It's been 3 weeks now since I developed Runners Knee, and despite dropping my distance and frequency dramatically, the pain is still here, and hasn't got any better (4/10 pain, after around 7km)

    Immediately after the irritation I started stretching on a near daily basis, run or not - but it hasn't really made a difference.

    Next up I'm going to try foam rolling the area - can anyone recommend a roller?

    I'll give it a couple more weeks - if there's no light at the end of the tunnel I'll start looking for a physio. What a nightmare.

    Has anyone made a full recovery, if so - care to share any tips?

  • It’s more about technique than which foam roller you use, I think most runners will have suffered some tightness here, sometimes it approaches pain for me these days but not often. This video is the closest I could find to what I do, for me the extra release on top of the rolling is the key to effectiveness, and for the most part i do it more as occasional rehab than every day, even though a physio will tell you prevention is better than a cure, I can’t be bothered until it actually hurts!

  • Hoka one one carbon x spe have now hit 470km, absolutely love them, i can’t think of another shoe that I’ve been happy doing everything from long slow runs at 5:30 min km down to 3:45 min Kms, feel that they’ll easily hit 550 maybe 600km which for me is insane, I tend to wear though the uppers or soles in most shoes by about 400kms

    Recent runs:
    14/12 - 5km easy
    13/12 - 7.47km @ 4:34/km - felt hard
    10/12 - 7km easy
    2/12 - 4.7km easy
    1/12 - 6x1km @ 4/km 0.5km rest between
    28/11 - 4.8km easy
    25/11 - wu, 4km TT, cd (managed the 4km in 16:17)

    Feels like it might, just might, be in reach. I'm regretting that 8 day gap a lot.

  • They are also much comfier than normal laces as they flex with the movement

  • Just rolled my ankle, heartbroken as need it to keep me sane and the weight off over Xmas. I know this is a ridiculous question but thoughts on how long until I can get out for a run again, it’s swelled but I can walk on it now without too much pain. It really is a crutch for me at the moment and I will be lost without it.

  • This needs pro advice rather than internet opinion but don't walk on it now even if you think you can. Ice, foot up, and I imagine ibuprofen if your chemist agrees and rest as much as you can in the early stages and see how it feels tomorrow, then the day after. I think you'll know when it's okay to run on it.

    I've had ones that are fine the next day, and others that have been horror shows. It may well feel worse tomorrow in which case it will be more serious.

    I've rolled my ankle and been fine the next day and I've also rolled my ankle and popped a chunk of bone off my Fibula which took a few weeks to heal.

    RICE and fingers crossed you've got a mild one.

  • Thanks both, I’ve rolled it so many times before but I’ve never relied on running so much for mental health so a few weeks/ month off hasn’t really bothered me. Resting up with plenty of ice tonight, it has stiffened up nicely already.

    It didn’t floor me this time so assuming my body wasn’t that desperate to stop myself breaking my ankle.

    Can totally relate to this. Its temporary. You could be fine in a day or two. I really hope it is.

  • Ooh, heal up! I've not rolled my ankle for a while but seemed to do every now and then in the past, maybe it's strengthened through all the running. What I do remember is the ankle being weak and easier to re-roll as it were, during recovery. So I would recommend that when you do feel OK to return to running, start out on level, predictable surfaces as much as possible. I think this is one instance where the advice to run on tarmac rather than off-road is actually of benefit, at least till you feel confident it's fully recovered.

  • (not a doctor alert) Like the others have said, RICE and see how it is in a day or so, it could be okay. But if it's not, don't ignore it. My ankle is still pretty fucked from when I sprained it in February (quite a bad sprain but I ignored it as I was on holiday, really stupid in hindsight) and I wish I had sorted out sooner. On the plus side, sales of ibuprofen gel at my local pharmacy have rocketed! Good luck and hope it feels better soon - stay positive!

  • Did you end up buying the Salomons? I decided that I couldn't face the trek over to decathlon (also I end up with too many impulse buys whenever I go there) and bought some asics trail shoes online. They're last season's, or possibly even the season before, so they cost about 15 quid - not the prettiest shoes I've ever worn (red/brown camo-ish print) but they'll get fucked up on trails soon enough. And cheap. Cos I am.
