Maybe things have changed in the last 3yrs, but the last time I spoke to someone with in depth knowledge of the cotton supply chain, they said you're looking at something like 60% traceability. So as a start I'd be dubious about anyone's claims.
Regardless, cotton uses a fuck tonne of water, organic or not.

I had a design tutor that has been pedalling this for some time. I can understand why brands have been slow to push the "buy less" moto but it's depressing how little people consider this still.
