But the times they are a changing.
I was ready for the latest Supersix, but it simply does not spark joy.
And once a man reaches a specific age they will require discs and custom geo.So I added myself to the queue for this.
Stayer crit bike.
AKA that rad bike Duke rides around in the Rapha blurbs.
I wanted one ever since I came across it on Stayer socials.
The plan was to keep it raw with a clear coat to show off Sam's brazing.
But I guess it would mirror Duke's bike a little too much.
Still undecided what to go for, I like understated full RAL jobs, but also some more artistic stuff. -

The plan (for now) is to have it painted inspired by the artwork for Crush, an album by Floating Points, but with a darker and different color palette.
Like an organic and liquid flow starting at the front of the bike but keeping the rear raw, showing off the brazing.

As is the way with these pre-midlife builds, certain milestones will also be taken, like a foray into Di2.
Ignoring that the world’s supply of groupsets have been diminished and Shimano will probably release a new groupset the week after I order one.
I started to look into Di2 compatible finishing kit and quietly ignoring the above. What are my options for fully DI2 integrated bars?
Or are they non-existent and do I always have to run the wires on the outside under the tape? -

Oooh... Any more pics of the Vitus 979? How did you deal with the 126mm rear spacing with modern group?
I have an identical frame currently built up as a single-speed; considering modern-group-road conversion...

Pro vibe handlebars have a hole in the back inside the stem clamp but getting the wires into the frame is still the challenge.
See this thread for discussions along the same lines -

I followed the thread a while back with a custom build in mind. Not really bothered about total integration, wouldn't be easily possible on a steel framed custom build.
I have already prepared myself for heat shrinking Di2 cables to hydro lines.
But the nuisance will be Di2 cables under bartape on the bottom end.
(Unless I find non-ugly carbon bars) -

I’m on the list too for one of the Stayers! Mid life crisis bros unite! Excited to see what you come up with.
Sam’s going to whack some hidden mudguard mounts on mine so I can use it for all the miles!
-

I'm officially claiming the term pre mid life, 40 isn't that far in yet is it?
I also thought about the mudguard mounts, how will you manage the front?
The futura disc fork doesn't have any mounts the last I checked. The only thing I asked was to swap over the hole for the rear hydro hose to the other side, as euro cabling and a clean front end is a must.
-

Futura Disc SLX is the best option - you can run up to 30c tyres or 28c and guards.
Let’s shake on pre-mid-life. My beard may be grey, but I still own a bmx.

Stripped CAAD10 has gotten paint and is ready for winter!
Started the primer off in our basement, but the smell was a bit too much.
Moved it all to a friends storage area and made a mini spray booth.
With both the CAAD10 & 12 forks
Will set off in a minute like this, I forgot how much I hated the race blades. Will definitely spec guard mounts on the Stayer.
The black decals did not work out that good, need to look into another color, purple maybe.
This will be sold in a couple weeks, so just might leave it as is... -
• #17
Looks great, why are you selling?
-
• #18
So, the Caad 10's have been sold and I have confirmed fit for the Stayer crit. I still need to mock up something on color palettes, but life has been fuck busy the last few weeks.
I am looking at finishing kit options, current setup in my mind is:
Extralite Hyperstem 120mm 12°
And I am able to get a good price on Black in bar and post, but no experience.
Anyone care to chime in on the Black Inc stuff?
-
• #19
The Extralite Hyperstem look super cool and it's super light but i read a lot of time that it crick a lot and it tend to move up on the steerer and give problem with the headset. there is a reason you want to use it?
-
• #20
That sounds like a weird problem that could be solved with carbon paste, properly torqued headset or use of a wrong steerer bung.
Would use the Hyperstem because of it's weight and one of the few options in 12° stems.

When does the Stayer arrive? V interested in that build.
If you’re going for Black Inc stuff, why not the integrated bar/stem? My default position was against them as I like the modularity of more components, but I think they are a good way to bring a bike bang up to date. May not suit rounder tube profiles of the CAAD, though.

I think Stayer is starting production this week, will still be a while once I get my hands on it as it's getting painted right after.
The complete build will also be a while as I decided I want to wait on some news on updated Di2. Unless I come across a placeholder in the meantime.
The Black inc kit will be for the Stayer and I think a traditional stem bar combo would look best. I just don't like the look of integrated bar/stem combo's, they never look really nicely balanced somehow.
-
• #23
Agreed. With thin tubing integrated bar/stem would be odd.
Can’t wait to see the Stayer.
-
• #24
This got posted on the Stayer socials with some more detail shots of the tubing.
Can't wait!

An extensive fit showed I needed a 130mm stem (or longer reach bars) on my SS, found a matching one for not so silly money locally. Not really liking the look of it though, might need to keep a lookout for a 130mm Pro Vibe 7s.
Also got me one of them short nose saddles, have yet to put some long hours in, but seems comfy!
Over the years I have (almost) exclusively been selling everything and buying Cannondale frames/bikes.
Almost because I plan to hold on to my Vitus 979 forever, it’s perfect with the DA7400/9000 mix.
Having recently sold the grey/black Caad10 with a full 6800 group.
And will upgrade and paint the stripped Caad 10 with 12 fork as the winter/bad weather bike and fast commutes. RAL 6021 and black retro decals have been ordered.
The epitome still being my Supersix, this thing just flies.
And commutes, school runs and hopping around town on the M600 have never been better.
I also have an old T1000 that has been put on hold for the following:
