• Surfy chaps... I'm in need of some advice on a board.

I've probably surfed a dozen times down through the years and I'm certainly not a good surfer but I know the mechanics and just need to get out more often.

I'm thinking of buying a board. Logistically a lot of my surfing opportunities will be Irish East Coast with occasional forays to the West Coast so we're talking small to medium waves and quite often sloppy mushy disappointment with an odd beaut day on the Atlantic...

Would I be mad to buy a high volume foam fish such as the Ocean and Earth Mark Richards Ezi Rider 6ft (47l) or should I just buy a 7ft6+ mini mal like a sensible person?

    I'm 180cm and c.85kg.

  • I went with an Olaian 900 series foam board from Decathlon when it was on sale! It's kind of perfect for a beginner but obviously not the sexiest bit of kit, I'd rather have supported a local shop but provided lockdown plays ball I'll try and get lots of surfs in in the coming year and then maybe treat myself to something nice from a local builder come summer!

I also bought a Srface 4/3 wetsuit and some Needessentials boots, gloves and a hood which I've not been able to use yet due to lockdown restrictions but planning a few Christmas surf trips at the moment!
