Would it be breaking the law if my sister in-law who live in Saudi with her husband and 2 kids, flew over and stayed with us over Christmas, apart from then breaking the rule of 6.
Asking for another family member, who believes that because this is where they stay when they do come back, its fine..
My personal opinion is that they shouldn't apart from the rule of 6 being broken, tier 2 aren't allowed to have people stay who don't live in the house.

Might a UV free ‘SAD lamp’ help? Lumie are made in the UK and don’t emit UV, iirc.
Shout out to Basset multi vits for their great taste, though I think they have like 5-7 micro grams of vit D.

I'd rather she just got outside into some natural light and moved a bit more. Blooming teenagers.

Isn't it covered by the Xmas exemption?
But, as always on this thread, if you're asking the question then you really shouldn't do it.

They would form part of your household for the duration if they only stayed with you. So the rule of six wouldn’t apply to you and them but would seriously put a block on anyone else visiting.

They are due to arrive on the 5th so would be here prior to that kicking in.

Saudi Arabia is not on the safe travel list, so they would be subject to 14 days self isolation on arrival regardless of any other Christmas relaxation.
Looks like they are allowed to self isolate with family and friends on arrival if that is where they are staying, but means no one else can visit.
I'm not sure where that advice falls in relation to tier 2 restrictions which suggest you can't have anyone to visit.

Thanks, your last point is the thing we are arguing about, if in tier 2 you can't have anyone stay then in theory they shouldn't come.

The bottom of this page is a list of exemptions to rules on "gatherings" which would appear to be a broad term for all the rules stopping you seeing people in certain settings.
The list of exemptions doesn't include allowing people who have travelled into the country to self isolate with you.
However the self isolation travel advice page , while saying you can self isolate with family members, also then says:
There may be other restrictions on indoor and outdoor gatherings with people from outside your household under the national rules that apply
from 5 November. You should ensure you are complying with those rules
as well.So its clear as mud really. As others have said, if you're looking to bend that many rules, the answer is probably that you would all be better off giving a miss this year.
Also, do you really want another family, including children, trapped in your house for 14 days while you can't even pop out to the pub?

Thanks, I'm baffled by their reaction really and have go to the point that I've voiced my concern and will now let them get on with it.

It is an almighty shag. My parents desperately want to see their grandkids nearish to Christmas. But 2 families are currently in T3 areas (even though one is 10 mins away from the Grandparents) and the other two of us in London have kids at 4 different schools and one in a T3 Uni.
I guess we'll end up going up for a cup of tea in the garden one family at a time.

How are the restrictions on pubs/restaurants going to work with bars at football grounds, theatres, etc?
If you're in tier 2 will you need a substantial meal with your half-time pint or are they just going to close all that stuff?

Deaths by different measures:
1)
The combined death toll recorded by the UK’s three statistical agencies – which count all deaths where Covid is mentioned on the death certificate – has now reached 71,719 deaths.
2)
The figure is higher than the government’s Covid death toll of 59,051. The latter figure only covers people who have died within 28 days of testing positive for the virus.
3) Combining various sources to bring the figure up-to-date and to arrive at 'more than 75,000':
In the last week for which UK-wide death figures are available there were more than 2,800 deaths registered across the UK, an average of over 400 Covid deaths a day.

The combined death toll recorded by the UK’s three statistical agencies – which count all deaths where Covid is mentioned on the death certificate – has now reached 71,719 deaths.
Further to that the government’s dashboard shows 3,384 people have died since the latest releases from statistical agencies, bringing the total number of Covid-related deaths to 75,103.

Local Chiswick guerrilla artist likening things to soviet bloc era living. I think that’s what they’re saying anyway.
A long way upthread,
I recounted an observation from the New York Subway Museum,
where a carriage dating back to the Spanish Flu epidemic had, at each end,
louvred slats concealing a UV lamp to help clean the air of infectious particles.
Here TfL will be employing the same concept for escalator handrails.
