• We use a snuffle mat a bit like @Stonehedge suggested but we made out own using a rubber door mat which is heavier and tied strips of fleece in every other hole. Dog goes mad for it and it takes her a solid 10mins+ to snuffle all her biscuits out of it

  • We used a snuffle mat to try to keep Otto engaged and entertained when he had to spend a month in his crate with a slipped disk. Used to take him ages to find all the treats and he seemed to enjoy it.

Be warned though, they get gross very quickly :D

  • I put someone from here in touch with my parent, not sure how much further it was taken.

I can check if he’s still available.

Is it you that’s interested? Or someone you know?
The reason for asking being I can answer some of your questions but some I’d be guessing at. If you like I’ll pm you my mums number and she’ll answer you fully.

  • I do wonder if its possible for a dog to be oversocialised as a puppy. Otto has spent 15 to 20 hours every week playing with dogs he is familiar with from the age of 16 weeks. Nearly four years now. Maybe he just doesn't understand that not all dogs want to ruff and tumble or that some dogs don't "speak dog " very well.

I'd think so. Hugo my mum and dads newfoundland still thinks every single dog is friendly and wants to play with him.
Unfortunately not all dogs think a 70kg+bear is friendly...

  • I'd think so. Hugo my mum and dads newfoundland still thinks every single dog is friendly and wants to play with him.

Otto makes the assumption that every dog wants to play with him and he bounds in but if the other dog signals he doesn't want to play then Otto just walks off and pays no attention. The problems starts when the other dog doesn't know how how to tell another Otto that they don't want to play and run away....sometimes squealing. Which is basically the opposite of dog language for not wanting to play, from what I have read.

  • Ah yeah, we're hoping to meet him just as soon as lockdown lifts but do follow up - Furious Tiles' parents had been ace at answering questions and they're doing such a good job with him. He deserves to go to the best home that wants him and you may well be the person to offer that.

  • It’s possibly us that would take him. But it’s very speculative , our two hounds are ageing and we are trying to decide is it time to adopt another, and how would that disrupt the two we have. Or should we have a canine hiatus when our two go to the dog bed in the sky.

  • If you are asking questions you should make a good owner. If it falls through tell me.

  • Good to hear, i was starting to think that they’re both becoming too attached and will want to keep him.

  • Thumbs up! Thanks dude. Yeah, will deffo shout if nothing comes of it but we've kinda fallen in love with the photos and vids so hopefully just meeting him seals the deal.

  • Great news - glad he’s staying in the forum too.

    Project thread?
    :-D

  • A snuffle mat might be a good idea actually!

  • I've heard tales of dogs that just ate the snuffle mat...

  • Have you tried things like kongs? Or even just chucking their dry food on the grass for them to snuffle out? Odie quite likes a plastic bottle full of food actually - fucking noisy but it keeps him occupied for ages

  • We've only had one incident of unsolicited nibbling so far but I wouldn't put it past her to eat a snuffle mat if it got in the way of her dinner.

  • Forgive the word of caution, but just something to bear in mind - my dog Bob was similar (cypriot street dog rescue, about 6 months old) and the first two weeks with us he was the model dog, seemed confident/happy etc and we congratulated ourselves on our great luck.

Then after that he got really very nervous, and we could barely get him the short walk to the park. Unfortunately culminated in him completely freaking out at a kid on a scooter one day, and slipping his harness and escaping, and sadly getting hit by a car.

Dog trainer we had subsequently said he heard similar of lots of rescues - initially very confident seeming, then its almost as though they decide, "actually, XYZ new thing is a bit scary". In retrospect, we definitely could have mitigated by doing less with him in those early days, and not being so "OMG, he's so great, lets take him to the cafe and the pub and the park".

Two years on and he's an excellent boy. Still get a chilling reminder each year from google photos "on this day..." feature which delights in showing me an animated gif of my pictures from the vets of him with his wired up jaw and broken legs!

  • Thanks for the advice! We've been warned of similar experiences by Underdog and we're doing our best to make sure we follow their advice and not get complacent. We're trying to be mindful of not taking things too quickly in the short term in the hopes of helping her settle in and develop better in the long term.
It is hard though, we just want to take her on adventures and show her off to everyone!

  • So here’s a new one on me, anyone here had a ‘hair splinter’ before?

Kiddo was moaning about a sore foot and on removing his sock we found one of our terriers hairs properly imbedded in the top. Had to use tweezers and it was a good half inch deep. Makes me retch thinking about it again.

  • Shave terrier? Buy slippers for small human? Whatever, sounds horrible, is the poor little bugger ok (kid, not dog)?

Tonight's thrilling installment of Dead Dogs R Us features Murphy, keep watching for future cliffhangers from Beamish and Boddington.

  • Sounds more like something that happened to me with a sea urchin!

  • Our dogs are stupid. There are literally 5 other dog beds around the house, yet they decide this is the way they want to do it, and then they cast me dirty looks like it is my fault that they have to share.

  • Ha! We’ve got 2 sofas in our living room - in the evening we sit on one and Odie basically has the smaller one to himself, yet he insists on lying on it right at the edge, hanging off the side. Every now and then he’ll just slide off the side and land in a heap, giving us a filthy look. USE THE WHOLE SOFA, TWATHOUND
