Maybe they just pushed advertising hard on them between those dates? Might have been as simple as that I guess. Or just that they suddenly became fashionable.
At the time the 5500 and 5700 were the cheapest Rolexes I think.

Could be they were selling them even cheaper than normal because in 1989 they did the first major revision of the model in 37 years (new reference number and caliber). Unthinkable nowadays that a line could exist pretty much unchanged for that length of time.
@Olly398 if you get a chance can you measure the case width please, mine is 35mm which again is peculiar as Air-Kings are usually 34. The date complication makes them a bit thicker too I believe.

Not sure what it is about these clone subs, but they're quite appealing....
Is it the super case copy?! Or is it that is £90?

Don’t think it’s any better than a San Martin.

Nice texture to the dial, a ‘79 for page 1979?
-
• #49466
A '75 unfortunately. Dial is lovely, shame about the spot of water damage but it was only £40.

Is Chrono24 the best place to find a Rolex 114270?
-
• #49471
Meh. Buy from a reputable seller that you can actually visit, imo. It works well for finding watches in your area though.

Anyone interested in this SPB143? My mate has it for sale, he lives in London. He says around £800 posted, so collected probably a little less. Mint, full set from the beginning of October. Let me know, I can hook you up :-)

Are there any fairly inexpensive watch winders that might make suitable Christmas gift suggestions?
I'm thinking in the "up to £50" range.
Yeah that’s odd, considering how long the 55xx/5700 ran for. I went down a bit of a rabbit hole about this last night as I was so surprised by the late date of @Olly398 ‘s watch. My 1969 5700 is practically identical and I realised I’d never double check the serial no.
