I was going to ask if that's a constellation but the screen is on the wrong side.
Nice set-up. We've been using a row of iMacs for similar things -max 5 though so far. I've got 3 and rent the rest. But they're a pig to fit in the car. That said for power/screen size they are convenient but mini pcs (mac mini *cough) just seems more fun and flexible.

Hey Amey, interested, is that a usb-c one?

Luckily I've been able to backup my existing phone, losing that data would be annoying.
That looks to have been very lucky. Just 2 hours after backing it up and it won't even turn on now.

Yep

Microsoft Teams
lol

Not my choice, it’s what the end client uses company-wide.
Chucking a zillion Macs at it was the only reliable way of getting this particular show to work lol

I upgraded to Big Sur last night.
My 2020 MBP is now bricked.
Am enjoying another day of Apple support.
My hypothesis this time: Does this thing have a BIOS? Did you corrupt it during an OS update?

Argh, nightmare.
Any sign of a fix?
-
• #16786
Don't get me wrong I'm very impressed you managed to do that with Teams.
Just know that it is just about OK for my very standard office worker usage but has so much wrong with it (out of sync audio being a big one).

No sign of a fix.
It's on a blank screen and is in a loop of playing the startup sound and silent for 15 seconds and repeat... bong... bong... bong...
Internet recovery (option + command + r) hasn't succeeded, that gets stuck in it's own loop of "Enter WiFi details" > downloading, time remaining 0:03 > blank screen > "Enter WiFI details".
Occasionally internet recovery answers with -2100F or something similar, but that's the only exit from the loop it gets in.
If I fire up normally... bong... bong... bong...

Fack.
Have you tried the usual PRAM/NVRAM resets, safe mode + verbose boot etc?
-
• #16789
Tried all the things... I think Apple are going to have to give me a new one.
Thankfully I only use a web browser, so there's no data loss.

What about not internet-, but regular recovery mode ([cmd] + [r] on startup, release when the apple shows)?
-
• #16791
Recovery mode doesn't work... never arrives in the recovery menu as it loops the startup sound after the initial Apple logo disappears.
-
• #16792
Yep, most likely some kind of EFI b0rk. Had similar happen to a couple of older Macs.
Good luck!

Ah ok, I see, well then

I had something like this with internet recovery and had to add a different DNS to my router (used google public). That allowed the download to start.

Other people seem to be having the same problem, and are piecing together the clues:
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/macos-big-sur-update-bricking-some-older-macbook-pro-models.2268438/page-22Reports on there say Apple are aware and doing repairs/replacements even for older machines.

My 2020 MBP is now bricked.
Oh dear, missed this, sorry to hear that. It happened to a friend's with Catalina when it was new. He got a replacement in the end I think but IIRC it was a bit of bother. They might handle it better hopefully after similar experiences recently.
I think it has to be BIOS because it never seems to happen to hacks.

Crossover appears to run well on Apple Silicon with Rosetta 2, which is quite a feat, if you think about it.

Impressive in its own right, but I’ll wait for full x86 VM emulation.

The Mac is going to be shipped back to them...
- 2 days to get to this point
- 1-2 working days for a box to appear
- put laptop in box, then call UPS to collect, allow 1 day
- 5-10 business days for the repair to happen
- 3-4 days for the laptop to be shipped out
So... £3k 2020 MBP, bricked by Apple's own hand, takes up to 19 working days to return to service.
Buying an Apple device has proven to be the worst tech purchase I've made. Currently on an old ThinkPad that is rock solid.
Once this is repaired I'm inclined to sell it and divest myself of Apple stuff.

Yeah thats not great.
I haven't had any issues with my Apple stuff over my 20 years using it.
