Earphones / Headphones: Where to try, what to buy?

  • Reccos for noise cancelling ear buds? The downstairs neighbours' building work is driving my WFH wife mad.

  • Grado sr80e? Or 125's if you can find a few more quid. I've never found open backs annoying for others at home.

  • I have the Sony WF1000 XM3 https://www.sony.co.uk/electronics/truly-wireless/wf-1000xm3 and the noise cancelling is excellent.

Not sure whether the battery would be good enough for a full day of work (although I guess you could charge at lunch or whatever).

  • Thanks. She's an Apple kinda gal, and not as obsessed with sound quality as I am, so might go for some Apple AirPod Pros. Refurbed on ebay they're pretty cheap.

  • I managed to get Currys to price match Pricelulu.co.uk on Airpod pros for my wife at £178.

  • How comfy are these if in bed or lying down? Want something to wear while listening to meditations or sleep hypnosis audio. Want a conduction earphone so earplugs can be worn to block out other noises.

  • Interesting idea...

The loop that connects the 2 earbuds isn't very flexible so it may get in the way. But maybe it can be pushed down more onto the neck. this may move the buds into an awkward position. The rubber coating isn't displeasing to the touch though.

I'll give it a go later!

  • Please report back. It’s not actually for me but a potential gift for my partner.

  • Instead of splashing out on some headphones I ended up getting a £25 Bluetooth transmitter so I can listen to vinyl on my (very good) earbuds. I’ve got it connected to the “tape out” red/white phono on the back of a 90s amp, which sends it raw, and from a ProJect II turntable sounds unbelievable – if it’s a good pressing. Doesn’t half expose bad pressings that I hadn’t noticed before though.

  • Please report back.

So the loop isnt as sticky outy as I remembered. Lying flat, the curve of my skull stops it from pressing upwards. Plus lying on my side doesn't hurt but I know that it'll increase the volume on that side.

If you do push on the loop, the part with aftershokz written on it does put a little pressure on the back of the ear.

  • I can happily report that my SoundMagic E11c's are still fully operational after being part of a particularly rowdy spin cycle in the washing machine.

Edit: If anything I think they sound better than before.

  • The newer version (Aeropex) is more flexible in general.
@dancing james I used to put the connector slightly higher up my head when used in bed.

  • Oh gawd. Boring help alert. Have read loads of this thread but option anxiety is setting in. Long time faves Sony (wired) brass mx500000000warrrgarrble (or something) went through the wash. The plastic Bluetooth neckband bobbins that I bought at a train station have died. I’ve got proper Studio headphones and a decent ear but need something unshit for walking about, working and dozing off with my iPhone. £100 budget. Help please.

  • In ears. And I’m leaning towards wires

  • I bought some Tin T3's last year following a recommendation here, and a FiiO Bluetooth receiver for when I was thinking I'd use them with my phone.
They've sat on a shelf for a year unused. I have too many earphones.
Think I paid ~65 for the earphones and ~25 for the receiver.
£60 if you want them both, otherwise I'll remember I still have them in another year's time...

    Edit: these...

  • Try the fiil t1 pro. I was sceptical bluetooth iems could sound decent, but they sound great. Still don't understand how it's possible as the bitrate is way lower then with wired iems on my quad dac, but now i only listen to wired headphones for listening sessions in the home.

  • Where would you buy these from?
Does this link seem like a decent option?

  • I got mine from aliexpress, payed about 60 euro's. I don't think there's much difference between sellers.
There's also the t1 lite, which seems the same as the t1 pro but doesn't have anc and improved ipx rating. The anc on the t1 pro isn't that great as it picks up a lot of wind noise and only blocks out low frequency engine like noises.

  • Thanks man. Will read some reviews and drop you a PM.

  • First impressions very good, cheers fella!

  • I've just picked up a pair of Bose Soundsport Wireless Free. They are refurbed from Bose and came in at £90.
This is the most I have ever paid for a set of headphones. I must admit I'm amazed. I watched a couple of Batman movies on my iPad and the sound is amazing, it was like being at the cinema.
Even watching BBC's Rap Game UK there is a much greater depth to the sound than I've heard before.
Really pleased... Let's hope they don't fall out easily...

UPDATE - super easy to switch between paired devices too (press button on left bud). Not something you use often but handy...

  • Yeah I’m continually amazed by the quality of my similar set (JLab sport). I got a Bluetooth transmitter to listen to vinyl on them at home and it blows me away. I do have to keep pushing them back in though, I’ve got stupid ear canals that don’t keep ear buds in. They’d fall out on a run if it weren’t for the clips.

  • People with Tin HiFi in ears (I presume they all take the same size buds): the buds on my T2's are wearing out and they were never quite big enough really to start with (I've got big ears).

I've tried two packs of replacement buds from Amazon that were recommended, all too small.

Any recommendations for replacement buds that are actually big enough for my ears?!

  • That was really useful to know, I bought a pair found on sale and the shop had a newcomer discount so got £35 off. Hopefully other half will be pleased with them.
