My wife can actually visualize rooms, so she just drew the layouts on paper.
I can't, so I had to model the kitchen (very badly) in SteamVR to get a sense of scale.That is free, but probably only worthwhile if you also have VR and are as spatially-challenged as me. You can still look at the 2D renders, but I'm sure there are easier ways of building those.

It's been asked a lot I know but, what free software are people using to mock-up room layouts? Apart from SketchUp. I've seen some great kitchen designs here the last few weeks.
