My partner is from Poland and houses out there are all built with basements. Mostly used for storing food and wood etc as opposed to cinemas and wine caves but you get the same perplexed face when you tell them houses in the UK rarely have basements.
Even the old blocks of flats (pre-communist) have a little section of basement for each flat.

Thanks, I managed to miss that and didn't want to make the obvious assumption. A little unfortunate for the company that their sign is in a press shot.
In Germany, pretty much every house is started with a pit for a basement. When I tell people there that here, basements are retrofitted under existing houses, it generally causes incredulity. :)
