  • That looks like it could be it!

  • Can anyone recommend a webcam to use for zoom etc? Ideally I'd be sitting on my sofa a few metres away and using my TV to show the family. Like a Facebook portal or whatever without letting zuck in my house.

  • I've got a Logitech C920, which works fine for me. I use it rather differently to your proposed usage, as I use it sitting at a desk with it connected to my PC, mounted on a stand made from a butchered desk lamp. It's been pleasingly trouble-free so far though.

  • Indoor bike training setup. Given I have frames and components to fit me, which training rollers or suchlike for indoor sweating should I buy if I want a decent robust setup?

  • if I want a decent robust setup?

Basic rollers will last until the heat death of the universe, or if they don't then any post-apocalyptic blacksmith will be able to get them back up and running.

  • I realise I might of asked too basic a question as many people are likely to have a lot of experience of indoor setups. Can I pair Zwift with basic rollers?

  • I picked up a Tacx Neo On Here for a very good price. I'm happy with it so far. The cobbles simulation pedal feel is surprisingly realistic on Zwift. Other than that It Just Works, which is in my book the highest level of praise.

I've got some Elite variable resistance rollers too, but frankly they're just annoying. And occasionally terrifying.

  • I guess what I'm really asking is where's the best point between cost and features for a training setup that would likely include Zwift or similar.

  • Can I pair Zwift with basic rollers?

I have no idea. Why would anybody want Zwift? You should be able to if you have a power meter and a wheel speed sensor which connect to whatever computer is logged into your cycling video game.

  • I have quickly gone from rollers to looking at trainers like the Wahoo Kickr. The Neo looks great too. I think it's going to be difficult to source some of the more popular models at the moment.

I was hoping I might be encouraged to use rollers and save some money but it makes sense that the more technological solutions are going to have some possibly short lived advantages.

  • This is what I'm trying to work out. Should I just get rollers or go for a more entertaining package because I get bored cycling indoors and then I'm just back to cycling in all weathers like I normally do all winter. This winter things will be a bit different and I need to burn some calories.

  • I was hoping I might be encouraged to use rollers and save some money

I encourage you to use rollers and save some money. The gamification of training is not for your benefit, it's for the financial benefit of the people running the games.

  • Thank you for the voice of reason. Are there any serious risks riding rollers?

  • FWIW I do ride way harder because I’m half way up a virtual Ventoux and need to complete it than I would otherwise with a bike just plonked on rollers

  • Mostly less dangerous than going for a ride outdoors.

  • I'd strongly disagree with this, but I depends how disciplined you are. I'm extremely lacking in the discipline department, and zwift makes indoor riding a hell of a lot more fun that just rollers. And because it's more fun, I do it more often.

  • Are there any serious risks riding rollers?

Not to your person. As with any stationary cycle training device, there is a severe corrosion risk to the bicycle.

  • Covering up garden furniture for the winter... In the past I've used a big tarp but it has a habit of blowing away and being generally a bit shit. Any better options to consider?

  • It's an aluminium Vitus but I hadn't thought about damage from sweat. Having seen the video demonstration of roller crashes I think I'm either back to cycling the streets for exercise or looking at the fixed trainers. I don't have enough safe space to be falling over in.

  • . I don't have enough safe space to be falling over in.

The less space the better if you're worried about falling, have something to stop you before you build up any sideways momentum. In reality, if you can ride a bike in a straight line, you'll never come off the rollers. You can add a little trail so your bike will be even more stable than it is on the road.

  • I was hoping I might be encouraged to use rollers and save some money

That's not really true. I've raced on Zwift and put more effort in than I might if it was just me on a Wattbike, same as seeing a timing gate or finish line on the screen can be more useful to push toward than just counting down the seconds.
There's a benefit to a smart trainer being able to hold you to a given power so that you don't have to, just as there's a benefit to switching the erg mode off and knowing what it feels like to push that power when you're mentally a bit tired.
Concentration and motivation waxes and wanes, and gamifying certain bits of what can often be a bit of a chore is useful. It's purist nonsense to claim the only benefit is to the software developer.

  • For those who were following my cardboard disposal woes, the first half went to the tip this morning.
