Today I noticed that the slightly rusty soil pipe on the side of the house looks pretty fucked.
I had this not so long ago. Cost about £700 for a plumber (they had to remove and reattach the toilet so probably a plumber job) to do it. Did it with a ladder.
Also it was discovered when downstairs were suffering damp problems due to it leaking so don't leave it too long ...
I have a list of basic maintenance and repair stuff that needs doing that I've been avoiding. It's all bitty work that no-one really wants to come out and do, and in some cases I don't really know who to ask.
Today I noticed that the slightly rusty soil pipe on the side of the house looks pretty fucked. The worst bit is the 'junction' piece that joins to the upstairs loo, but the vertical sections above and below are also cast iron. It's a bit windy so I haven't been up on a ladder yet to inspect it properly - I'm also loathe to pull away any of the peeling paint in case it has some kind of structural/protective property. How difficult is it to replace, and who would do it? Doesn't feel like a plumber's job. General builder? Some other specialist?
At that height I'm not too bothered about material, but the lower section needs to stay (or be replaced by) cast iron due to the neighbours parking their car veeery close to it. The chimney also needs repointing, but I've put it off for so long that the side of the house does as well so at least that's turned into a bigger job... And the bargeboards are in desperate condition... In recent storms I've been hearing sounds of little bits falling down the chimney, I'm thinking maybe loose mortar or something blowing in. There's also a missing tile that I can't see (just saw the evidence of it on the ground) and can't see from inside (close-boarded on that side) but presumably needs replacing anyway.
