  • Barno recovering from abscess - which was in an inconvenient position and he would not tolerate a cone at all, but amusingly quite chilled about wearing a newborns top for a few days to keep him off the stitches.

  • I have always been amazed at how incredibly rapidly a cat can develop an abscess. Also amazed at how much the contents of a feline abscess pongs!

  • Absolutely! We had an elderly black cat who had a large one on her nut. Being of a nervous disposition en route to the vet she clamped herself firmly to my front. Cat baskets were not an option. 5 feet from the vets front door she had managed to burst it. I threw that jumper away... it was never going to come back from that kind of reek.

  • Looks chilled enough there but how did you get the top on him, sleeves and all?!

  • To be honest he didn't mind at all. I did have to reposition his fur for the sleeves as he kept twitching when he was walking. And the top does say 'I'm a Big Bear' which made it even more comical.

  • Does anyone have any experience of deaf cats?
A friend has told us about one that's being rescued in Greece and would have to be an indoor cat, which is ideal as we live in a flat. Do they have any special requirements?

  • I grew up with a deaf cat, we had to tap on the floor to get his attention as he could feel the vibrations on the floor, we didn't suddenly approach or touch him without tapping on the floor first to make sure he knew we were there. He had a dangerous habit of sleeping under the wheel arches of my neighbour's van but seeing as your one will be indoor you won't have that issue!

We lived in a quiet cul de sac with little traffic so he was ok to wander outside.

  • Fabric was stone deaf for the last four or five years of his life. He was also an indoor only cat.

Can honestly say it didn't change too much at all. He was such a laid back cat he didn't get startled by much at all despite not having one of his most important senses available.

As Kat says, its a good idea to be careful to tap or blow or otherwise announce your presence in a way that won't startle a deaf cat but in our case it wasn't necessary.

The only major drawback was as he became deaf his meow became a lot louder. He literally didn't know the sound of his own voice. To the point that it could disturb the neighbours if he meowed too much. In reality it wasn't a problem but perhaps somethig to consider if you have antsy neighbours.

  • Better for both of you that he could pass in your arms after a long, loving life.

    RIP Fabric.

  • Thanks for the offer, I’ll let you know.

    Sorry to hear about Fabric.

  • @Stonehedge @KatBalou'sPhone

    Thanks 👍🏼
The loud meow thing is a consideration, I've got a 15 month old who's loud enough and this kitten is described as having a 'big voice' so the last thing I need is them competing!

  • We live in a fairly well made block of 1920s flats so while our sound insulation isn't perfect its a lot better than most new builds for example.

When Fabric really gave it a bellow our neighbours could hear him but only just. It wasn't something that would cause annoyance even if late at night.

  • Thanks again.
Our block was built in '89 and is a damn sight better than where I lived before.
I'm seriously considering it because I bloody love cats and haven't had one for years. It'd be nice for my son to grow up with them like I did, we got my first cat when I was one and he died when I was 22!

  • @Stonehedge sorry to hear about Fabric. Had to put Puck down a few years ago but did it at home. It’s awful but the best way. Don’t understand why it isn’t standard practice to do a home visit.

  • Trying to get the stuck neighbourhood bird wrangler down from our tree this morning

  • It is international cat day.

  • Yes but when is there going to be an International Men's Day!!! PC brigade gone mad!

  • Dog? Mouse?

  • Anyone else's cat shout at them when they try to leave home? After working from home for the past few months if I leave the boat this one runs after me and just shouts. She is also obsessed with the laptop when we have our weekly team meeting so is now a regular at them. It would certainly be lonely all day without her.

  • James just had his third arthritis injection and he has seemed, over the past week, to be much happier jumping up onto things rather than dragging himself.

  • How do you find having a cat with all those plants? I'm about to get two kittens and I'm a bit worried as I have plants everywhere.
