• anyone ever suffered a thigh/quadricep contusion?
I crashed on my downhill bike 10 days ago, going pretty fast and my thigh hit a tree taking the brunt of the impact.
I went to the minor injuries unit as I couldn't bend my knee past 45 degrees without excruciating pain. I was basically sent home and told to rest and ice it. After a couple days it started to feel a bit better to the point I could walk around the house with a limp without too much pain if I took it slow.

But after it starting to feel like it was getting better the past 3 days its been more painful with a burning pain at the sides of my knee and up and down the back of my leg. I'm slightly concerned by the burning pain thats started as that wasnt happening to begin with.

I was told this type of injury is common in sports especially skiing with folk hitting trees. At hospital the nurse said it would be "a couple of weeks" for it to heal but 10 days later it doesn't actually feel all that much better than to begin with.

It's starting to get me down not being able to get out cycling or do much else really. I'm wondering if I should be asking my gp about physio. I'm a wee bit concerned this could be something that affects my cycling long term.

Has anyone else ever suffered a hard impact injury like this to the thigh? What was your experience/recovery time?

  • I did something similar a couple of years ago, landed on a partially buried tree trunk and my thigh took the bulk of the impact. I could cycle, but walking was much more difficult.

I had a major race two weeks afterwards, which I rode, but I had lingering issues for another two weeks after that, so almost a month to properly recover.
