There were two down on the tv shots. They weren’t moving much but not on an unconscious kind of way. More on a what the f*** happened there kind of way.
Edit - Wackerman apparently unconscious at some point.

Two riders from an Italian team too. Doubt the helicopter pilot is going to be popular. It looked pretty bad.

Both Vini Zabù riders, Etienne van Empel and Luca Wackermann. Etienne van Empel managed to cross the line, Wackermann has been brought to the hospital with a broken cheekbone

He earned 625 points on Saturday and Sunday. Not bad for a has been.

BBC reporting rumours that Wackermann has a broken pelvis. Now that’s gonna be a big insurance claim against someone.
Hope he hasn’t and he recovers quickly. -

Rumours abound on TCP that Remco will somehow be off to La Vuelta.

Seriously - fuck being a pro cyclist. The risk of injury is ludicrous.
Bottles bouncing around, hoardings being blown over. How many crashes have there been in the last year that you could say we’re the fault of race organisers/motos/camera crews etc? I bet it’s in double figures despite the fact there’s not been much racing.

It does seem like more bidon bullshit this year?
I know bottles will get dropped and bouncing bottles are inevitable but the ‘flyweight’ elite bottles they use now are a bit shit compared to the older ‘corsa’ type in the same cages.

they stay in during the cobbled classics presumably because people are using alloy cages bent to ensure greater security. not sure why shit italians roads dont deserve the same treatement

Read this list elsewhere this morning, it’s not nice reading.
Is it me or are there more real serious injuries in the last 3 or so years? And more seem to be down to poor risk management (risk mitigation) by the race organisers. -

I'm sure the CPA have compiled detailed data and are about to address this in the sternest terms

It seemed to be collarbones and wrists, now it seems more vertebrae, and other more serious sounding injuries.
Van Avermaet also has broken ribs, puncture lung, fractured vertebrae. Maybe so many of the riders have pinned collarbones that they stay solid, and the force travels to other bones instead?

From the outside it seems that particularly in the one-day races people are racing hard from the off as opposed to settling in a bit. I don't know if it's just the increased professionalisation (didn't actually know that was a word?) of sports and wobbliness of sponsorship which means results are the goal no matter what it does to the riders. It could just be a lot of bad luck or the fact we hear more about riders injuries through social media etc.

Organisers now saying it cannot have been the helicopter as it was over the finish line, that the barriers were tied together and there must have been some other external influence. I wonder if it’s possible someone tried to cross the road and separated the barrier and it then was easier to blow across. With those advertising banners it’s pretty much a sail.
-
• #27619
Either way, the organised have got a responsibility to stop that happening.

Isn't the advent of fully broadcast stages partly blamed for stages being raced hard all day?
Need to re-introduce the Cipo fag break during the bit while they used to ride piano before the TV came on. -

lawson craddock looks like he needs to put his seat up a fair bit

forum approved streaming link, is that allowed to be posted here?
-
• #27624
Indeed... The barriers and security of them can only be with the organisers ultimately

Pitch black climb.. hard to see anything on screen with glare while pretending to work
Apprently one of the helicopters blew barriers into the road and crashed two riders at the finish of the Giro
