The Isle of Arran distillery has a good break down of the costs. Obv not payable all at once but still comes out to just under £30 a bottle, so not a massive saving from just buying a bottle from the shop.

I have a share in a American Oak ex-Bourbon Barrel at the Ardnamurchan Distillery. Cost £300. There are 10 of us. We'll go visit the distillery in 5 years time and have a wee taste, and then meet in the Spring of 2030 to make a call on whether to bottle it. When we do my share is 20 bottles.

So in answer to your question @cornelius_blackfoot - yes, group buys are a thing!

I would be interested in a couple of bottles when you get them.
Is there enough interest and tasting similarities in this thread to buy a barrel?

i was reading about Ardnamurchan the other day - their eco credentials and use of blockchain are quite a unique approach, i think you could be onto a pretty good investment there.
i was going to try and bag a bottle of their first single malt when it gets released. -

Yeah, using the blockchain through their production process is interesting, and one of the reasons we went with them. We'll see how important it is when it comes to providing provenance, but one of the ways to make back the cost of bottling / taxes is to sell a bottle or two, so it's good to know every bottle can be traced from source.

Yeah as others have said it's very much a thing (most distilleries do it) .It used to be a very cost effective way to buy whisky but tax and the fact that scotch has never been more in demand means you're not going to get the best return for your money but if you love whisky I can't think of a better way to spend your money.

Is this done with scotch/Irish whisky?
Would it be possible for a group to purchase a single barrel?Yes, and yes. Some friends and I bought a barrel from Bruichladdich many, many years ago. We bottled it after 14 years. I ended up with about 24 bottles from my share, I think. All gone now though sadly.

I would down to join up on this. I think the idea was floated a while back. I think the big challenge would be on distillery selection.
-
• #3411
If you got the cost down to £30 for 10 people for each distillery, you could then form spirit bubbles. And then swap bottles.
If narrowing choice became a problem. -

Are there 30 people on here who would spunk £30 each to get multiple bottles of scotch in about 10 or so years?

Mellow corn
Can't comment. Bourbon/Tennesee whiskey are min 51% corn in the mash, Rye is min 51% rye in the mash.
80% corn seems like a high sugar -> high alcohol method. Can't say I've ever had any Mellow Corn to the best of my knowledge.
'shine will have no maturation, so any maturation could only improve the flavour. I've never had moonshine but I've sampled raw spirit in Scotland and it's very unpleasant.

it's very unpleasant.
.
I mean. I tried it, and had my own jar in the house, but yeah. It was rough and hot and instantly caused me to check I could still see. -
