If they used the same panel for all e46's it could be a button used on higher spec cars to auto fold the mirrors in. Just a guess though.

Folding mirrors button, provided they are folding mirrors and someone hasn't fitted the wrong switch :), the sliding switch switches between control of left and right mirror, also if the switch is set to control the right mirror the left mirror will dip when you select reverse or vice versa :)
