  • According to this
    https://www.pocket-lint.com/games/news/playstation/143354-sony-playstation-5-release-date-rumours-and-everything-you-need-to-know-about-ps5
The PS5 will have a spare PCIe slot for you to add another NVMe SSD. You'd probably also be able to add a new drive via USB but you'd lose a lot of the performance benefits.

  • Which version do you have? I have what is prob and early gen and I find the UI terrible...

  • it's a 2020 43". the UI is silky smooth - my main TV (4K hisense 55") is an absolute dog in comparison (with the others I've used - sky/humax/virgin TiVO - not much better...)

  • Oh nice. Mines maybe 4 years old? Defo sluggish.

  • I downloaded Carrion after reading this. Great fun!

  • Anyone dabbled in the new black ops alpha/demo?

  • Mark of the Ninja down to £5 on Switch, absolute bargain

  • We've just been given a telly, so I'm keen to buy a console for fucking around on, and playing some games with my wife. I've been looking at getting a cheap secondhand ps3 slim. Is this a stupid choice, anything else I should consider? I know the PS5 is coming out in Nov, but
we're likely to get a fair bit of use out of it before then so don't mind that prices will probably drop for ps4/3 after that.

Any reason I should consider an xbox 360/one? My nephew has an xbox and plays fortnight - if I got a ps3/4, would I be able to play with him, or would I need an xbox?

  • I think the best thing to do in this instance is to try to put together a list of games you want to play, and pick the console that has the most/best selection. (Personally I'd be looking at a Switch for some good local multiplayer gaming)

Fortnite looks to be cross-platform so PS4-XBox One play should be fine.

  • PS3 is significantly outdated now. I would recommend at least a current gen system.

An Xbox one S would be the cheapest overall cost with game pass but, as @mmccarthy said, it depends what games you want to play.

  • I've just been having a play with geforce now, game streaming, recently.

It's decent, no noticeable lag or anything.

Even had a try with my mobile. Screen was obviously a bit small but with an Xbox One controller it's pretty fun.

  • Tbh, I’d quite like a gran turismo game, GTA of some sort, red dead redemption, and then stuff I can play with my wife (think easy and fun).

I know fuck all tbh. If it had a blue ray player that’d also be a dealbreaker. Do a lot of the modern budget versions of consoles not have a disc drive?

  • Xbox One S has a UHD Blu-ray drive for normal blu ray and 4K blu ray.

    PS4 only has normal Blu-ray.

Game pass would allow you to play over 100 games for a monthly fee but none of the games you listed are part of it (of course gran turismo is PlayStation). However forza horizon is free on it.

Might be worth checking the price difference on Xbox one S and OG PS4

  • PS3, it's very obselete, but CEX for games would be cheap i'd imagine.
You can get an Xbox for few ££ and add on game pass (it's Netflix for games on Xbox)
Or PS4 and PS Now (similar to Game Pass)

Maybe search what game are on each and see what floats you boat more.

  • The size and depth of the PS3 catalogue is not to be sniffed at, just no good if you want to play the latest AAA games or the newest Fifa

  • Everyone's saying the PS3 is obselete but I still regularly fire up my PS2!

  • Mario Galaxy is so good! It's such a joy to play a Mario game for the first time, gaming heaven...

  • Digging through old junk at parents house...

  • With the remake just out I'd say you're at peak opportunity to flog that on ebay for a ridiculous price.

I'm actually popping up to my parents' today and need to see if my SNES is still there!

  • God, its crazy how retro they look and also at the same how vividly I remember popping it open with that big button.

  • did that with n64 - always regretted it. also the disc, while playable isn't in what I'd call sellable condition. mostly just pleased with how functional the actual console still is - and very little yellowing. Think it was a xmas present ~1996. Only thing thats a little perished is the rubber on the analogue/dual shock controller. The d-pad only controller is heaven for THPS though!

IIRC they were quite highly rated as audio CD players - might have a play and see if I can integrate it into my hifi setup - not that I own any CDs any more...

  • Thanks for the advice everyone. This may sound stupid, but other than playing Fortnite with my nephew, and playing RDR and GTA, I don't really have a fucking clue about games, which makes me think that the platform itself doesn't matter. I imagine there will be a fun driving game Forza/GT, and options for playing easy games with my wife. How much is the games pass thing? Is it about £10/mo? I seem to remember buying a code off a dodgy website for my nephew to get it cheaper because his parents hadn't renewed it for him (which pissed me off no end tbh, don't buy the lad a console then not pay for the subscription he needs!).

  • PS4 only has normal Blu-ray.

Pretty sure the telly we were given is just standard Blu-ray spec, not ultra HD, so either would be fine. We don't have a DVD player of any sort at the moment so standard BR would be more than fine.

  • Such a classic piece of design. I had an n64, but the PS just looks way cooler. Maybe I'll sack off the PS4 and just get an original PS and buy Wipeout and Tekken for some low poly nostalgia.

  • Quite enjoying Mario 64 from new Switch collection.

As a big Mario fan I’m lucky that I’ve never owned N64 or Gamecube, so all 3 games are/will be completly new to me.

Was a bit afraid that M64 will feel too outdated, but actually having lots of fun and it’s nice to actually play it instead of watching all the speedruns of the game.

What I really hate about it is the camera controls, THE FLYING CAP POWER UP and water levels (obviously).
Also having some difficulties with some pin point movement.

But other than that, great level design, audio and “mission” based collecting stars.

Can’t wait to play the other 2 entries.
