  • There are differences between the two in composition. The Shimano fluid has a higher boiling point. Does it matter and can you mix them without weirdness? Probably not and yes...but I'd avoid doing so if I could.

Find someone online who's done it. Don't take their word for it if they have no front teeth.

  • I'm sure they all claim that their own particular brake fluid is sprinkled with magic pixie dust, but one will work in the other. Personally I'd avoid mixing the two, although I doubt that in practice it would be an issue. As I said, if you need a small bottle of Shimano oil, let me know. I have some spare.

  • if you need a small bottle of Shimano oil, let me know

Very kind, but I'm in Germany so not terribly practical. It's been fine for a couple of months now, looped up and kept in place with cable ties, will just have to wait a bit longer.

  • Thoughts on wearing patterns with military associations?
Like Black Watch tartan. I'm feeling surprisingly off about it. I don't mind camo (apart from the aesthetic challenge) as it's not specific in the same way.

Tradition has it that those who have no tartan of their own can wear the Black Watch (The Universal or Government Tartan) or the Hunting Stewart, but not the Royal Stewart without the express authority of the Queen. However, commercialisation in recent times has rather blurred this. The one tartan which cannot be worn by anyone unless the Queen's permission has been granted is the Balmoral.

Guess it depends on the context.

  • oh it's definitely 'allowed', it's more whether people feel ok with it.

  • Chucking in my 2p-worth... And admitting right off the bat that I'd not have a problem with it myself.

It's not as ubiquitous as navy blue (for instance, which has mostly lost its immediate military associations, barring the name!). But I'd say, and am happy to be corrected, it is,as tartans go a pretty universal one and recognisable as such and I would say that the military associations to most people are not as immediate.

(EDIT: I hadn't read Hjusth's link, above - and that even says it's effectively the universal tartan)

  • Understood, but if you’re going, for example, to wear a kilt w/o having a clan tartan yourself, the Black Watch tartan seems to be the one people would traditionally expect you to use (edit- and presumably be most ok with you using), military associations aside.

  • if you’re going, for example, to wear a kilt w/o having a clan tartan...

...then it's worth bearing in mind that both kilts and 'clan' tartans are approximately 98% romantic bullshit. As such, anybody who has strong opinions about which one somebody else should wear can get tae fuck.

  • After reading this, the only tartan I would consider wearing would be Balmoral.

  • oh it's definitely 'allowed', it's more whether people feel ok with it.

Given that I'd wouldn't be able to identify it as such, I'd say I'd feel fine about it. I suspect most of the population wouldn't be able to pick out a Black Watch tartan from a tartan ID parade.

  • This is the exact conclusion I came to.

  • This is very interesting, as a forrin I find camo has a much stronger association with military than any tartan.

  • You could glory in the Maple Leaf Tartan, official tartan of Canada, whilst saluting the Balmoral-clad Royal of tour choice.

  • as a forrin I find camo has a much stronger association with military than any tartan.

Even though 16 Canadian infantry regiments wear plaid skirts 🙂

  • @Colin_the_Bald @gbj_tester
    Leftover monarchy malarkey, nobody cares.

  • I believe they're still your monarchy as well, feel free to keep them as I don't want the fuckers!

  • Most Canadoers would gladly drop the association and associated costs. I really don’t understand the need to retain that crew, it’s not like we get special discounts at greggs or anything.

  • anybody who has strong opinions about which one somebody else should wear

Should probably have phrased more specifically to mean having thoughts about wearing it yourself rather than judging someone else. It slightly doesn't sit well with me, was curious if anyone else felt the same but seems like it's just me. It is a very common pattern after all. And I have absolutely no problem with navy blue.

  • Just get whatever tartan skirt you like. They have a great balance of being really formal and really silly at the same time, which is great for heavy drinking at weddings and getting attention from tipsy middle aged ladies.

  • ladies.

    and gentlemen 🙂

  • I need to design a logo for my custom bike, it's just one work: "ORLOK" . I have no idea where to start. whats the easiest way to do something not shitty by myself?

  • Just typographical or with some sort of illustrated/graphical elements?

  • Just typography. It have to be sand blasted on the brushed finish so i guess it have to be fairly simple
