Alright kiddos. I think I've narrowed down my car choice and I'm really really tempted by an Audi TT for about £5k to £6k. For that price I can get FSH as well as ULEZ compliance, and a mileage of around 80k - but that does mean the thing will be about 12 years old.

Am I utterly insane to contemplate this? Is it going to be a money sink even with the FSH? I don't mind doing what needs doing but if it's likely to need a complete rebuild every few years I don't want the hassle. Appreciate any advice.

I'm currently thinking of doing the same, but with 20 year old Boxsters, MR2s and Mk2 MX5s if it makes you feel better.

Hah... I was so late and so frazzled from work, but it was a fun drive over - I love my car.

That is about the age/mileage of my gti and i am starting to have to fix more stuff each year. this year i will have to replace the central locking in the driver's door, which will be £££. last year it was the rear control arm(s) and relevant stuff. that had to include tyres, too.

i reckon i spend a grand a year on maintenance, which will only go up. the car has been pretty much reliable and hasn't let me down yet, apart from trying to work out the issue with the door a few months back.

MG midgets, buy the cheapest possible and get it rebuit....or buy a shell you can inspect. BRM race car is the reason to do this.

That's good to know. I don't really mind regular maintenance if it's relatively predictable, it's the wild swings that I find hard to cope with. Will bear it in mind. Thanks dude.
