  • And the largest power consumption probably.

  • My Garmin 830 is no longer making sounds today. I've checked and the 'tones' are still enabled. It did an update a few days ago, anyone else found they've lost sound?

  • I've turned it on and off a few times but trying to avoid doing a factory reset if I can. Hopefully the sound will come back as mysteriously as it's disappeared. If it stays silent for a few days I'll factory reset.

  • Try plugging in to pc?

  • The patch notes for the latest update say:

‘Removed unnecessary beeps for notifications that don't need them’

Perhaps they’ve been a bit overzealous?

  • Yeah mine was totally silent, no sounds for anything.

I'll try plugging it in to a PC and also see if it magically fixes it for the commute home.

  • Mine (530) was the same now I come to think of it. Haven't looked for a solution yet though.

  • Mine was making sounds again this morning...

Not sure what solved it but it could be any of the following

    • Toggling 'Tones' on and off multiple times
    • Restarting Multiple Times
    • Plugging into a PC

  • Whilst I'm here, who has managed to turn off the 'virtual partner' on the latest gen of Garmin units? My virtual partner is able to ride up 20% gradients at 30km/h so isn't much fun to ride with... That's certainly one annoying notification beep I'd like to disappear.

  • Yeah, the little bastard. You could disable it for individual courses on the 800 but I think all subsequent units have forced it upon us.

  • Has anyone tried the new solar version of the Garmin Instinct? I need a sports watch and this seems about right.

  • Another Q: I want to use my phone to navigate around a new city (planned a route on Google Maps - trying to scout a nice route with smooth roads) but don't have or want to use a handlebar mount. Can I just set the Google Maps directions running and use some bluetooth earphones (or one, to be safer), and have the phone in my bag? Should be fine, right?

  • I used to use a single headphone with Google maps to navigate! Works alright until you need to make a few turns in quick succession. It also gets confusing if there are a couple of roads next to each other without signs and you're not sure which one you need.

  • I've been using a Wahoo Bolt Elemnt for a couple of weeks and liking it so far! I find the navigation is a lot easier to use if you set it up so that it tells you the distance until your next turn.

  • Just plotting some routes with RWGPS as a trial and I'm clearly being an idiot but how do I move an existing route?

I've got a bit where the imported route takes a strange shortcut. Komoot I'd just drag the line back to the route I want it to follow and it'd be fine but I can't figure out how to do it in RWGPS. Any hints?

To give you an idea... the bit at km4 I can't seem to get rid of

  • I think I'd normally do this by selecting 'Add/Remove Control' on the right hand pane, clicking on the section of the route to move and then drag that point to the road I'd rather have the route go on. There might be a neater way of doing it though.

  • Actually... I did it this time. Clearly I'm a moron

  • That's how I used to do it (one bluetooth earpiece, you can get them for a tenner or so).

It's generally OK if you have a vague idea of where you're going but sometimes the directions are a bit tough to follow if you don't know street names or you're turned around and don't know which direction you're going.

It should renavigate you back onto it though so I tended to carry on regardless until it sorted me out.

  • Thanks for the replies <3

  • I noticed recently that the recorded rides from the Garmin 530 look a bit shit. Is that
low accuracy normal? If the track looks that poor how reliable is the data of speed and
    distance?

  • There’s a limit to the accuracy of GPS in built up areas. Buildings block the line of sight to satellites, there are reflections, etc. Most GPS units, except the real bottom of the market, have reached the point where they’re as good as they’re going to get in terms of accuracy.

I suspect the Edge 530 is no better or worse than the high end units in this regard.

  • The wiggly bit North of the river on Upper Thames Street is largely in tunnels and cuttings to be fair

  • I guess that makes sense, I kind of thought with having the map and the speed sensor it could
generate a more plausible track. I don't know where I saw it but I remember an app or tracker
    that could snap to streets.
