If the thread tends retrogrouchy, it's not simply because we're old, but because so many modern bikes, while technically excellent, are tragically ill considered aesthetically. This applies just as much to nouveau steel builders trying too hard and failing as it does to mass market plastic bikes which are rationally designed to appeal to people with money rather than taste.
