I have a waterproof jacket I got given at a race, it's ok for light showers but it's a nightmare to get off when it's wet. I have to make sure my watch is out of the sleeve as otherwise it gets waterlogged. It's white and so gets filthy easily too. Maybe you get what you pay for? (LOL just kidding, go to decathlon)

If you’re in hills or mountains or out for hours upon hours then a quality waterproof is sensible (more so if you have to stop or slow down)
For urban / park stuff for up to a couple of hours then I just use a cheap decathlon gilet if it’s raining - the wind proof one that breaths rather than the actual waterproof. It’s enough to act as a layer even when it soaks through.

Fwiw I use:
Remote = Montane Minimus over merino layer(s) depending on time of year.
Local = Montane featherlite (wind jacket) over Merino.
Last night the wind jacket came off as I warmed up and was carried scrunched up in my hand as it's tiny. Although wet the merino layer (long sleeve) kept me warm. In winter I'd do same with extra mesh layer under the merino.
If it's a shorter local run from & to home I'd likely not bother with waterproof.
What are people's experiences with waterproof jackets
I just need something lightweight & packable that I can take out when / if (but most likely when, given the current weather) the weather turns, although I not planning to be anywhere particularly remote (maybe 10 minutes from a village at any point).
They all seem to be insanely expensive though - Even more so, considering how infrequently I expect to be wearing one.
Currently my top choice is the Salomon Bonatti Race Jacket - £80, 160g, 10k/10k
To be honest, it's my only choice, unless I can find something cheaper & as good.
