I picked up an Asus (can't remember the model) for around £150.00 in January of this year. Running the most recent Windows OS. I think it came from John Lewis. TBF I think it has been switched on no more than half a dozen times since I've had it - (I'm more Mac inclined, I bought this to do a specific job - which I've not really been doing). Would buy again.
ETA - Model E203M
ETFA - Looking at JLP's website, all their prices appear to have been bumped up since January - but you should be able to pick up something in your price range.
ET - Go on about it....
If you buy from JLP you've the option of extended warranty - which gives some peace of mind when buying entry-level stuffs. -

The normal advice is buy a refurbished office laptop from ebay, normally something like a Lenovo X220. You get plenty for your money but the battery life doesn't tend to be up with more modern laptops.
Looking at the use then you may also want to look at Chromebooks. The only spanner in the works there would be the photo storage, you'd need to store them in the cloud or on an sd card that's plugged in. These are a lot more usable than a cheapo windows laptop I'd say.
Where can I find out about very cheap laptops? My partner wants to pay about £250. Only used for internet, emails, light wp, photo storage (but not editing). Any suggestions?
