Still far less rattly though.
I'm a pannier man, but off road I'm not sure I'd trust them, seen a few cases of hardware working loose on the pannier.

Cross post from bike packing:
I have a metal briefcase, dimensions 45.5 x 33 x 10cm, which perfectly contains all of my snooker refereeing kit.
I want some way of attaching it to my rear pannier rack. (Wrong thread, I know, but it seems sort of appropriate - read on.)
Instead of buying a pannier that is big enough to accommodate it, I am after a more elegant solution.
First thought was to drill through the case and add some pannier clips, but that will be a bit ugly, possibly not waterproof and annoying when the case is off the bike.
Next option was to find a product that already does this task, and there is one, the Steco Attaché-Mee. But it will be heavy, non foldable and a bit fugly.
I am now thinking about a kind of net of webbing straps, two that go around the case and two that go under it, with pannier hooks attached and an anti sway clip, preferably with tensioning buckles as appropriate and retaining clips. Etc etc , waffle waffle, ummmmm.
Any suggestions or ideas that I've missed?
Any idea how to make this thing, or who to speak to? (Sadly Black Rainbow Project is not able to help me out at the moment, I asked.) -

Maybe a DIY version of the Porcelain Rocket Panniers? It should be fairly easy to make up some sort of sleeve that is attached to the rack and then the briefcase slides into it. Otherwise a porteur/Pizza rack witht the case lashed to the platform, but that will depend on your bike setup...

Surely a flat top rack with a bag or basket and bag would be the best/easiest bet?

Depending on your bike, a front rack like what Soma, Specialized or Surly make would work well.
I just measured my Soma porteur rack and it would fit flat on that with only a bit hanging over the edges front and sides. Could strap it down with bungee cords easily. It all depends on your bike and bars.

Looking for a rack clearing 29x3.0 tyres, any recommendations? Frame is 2014 Surly ECR (size XS, probably will need longer mounting hardware anyway). Something like Tumbleweed T-Rack or Mini Pannier Rack (mostly to carry a drybag on top, maybe small panniers). Any recommendations?

I should have said, I don't want a front flat rack on the bike because:
A) I don't like them
B) I already have a pannier rack on the front. -

Fair enough. It would work really easily, but you’ve ruled it out.

Yep
I've ordered some webbing and buckles and will get busy with the sewing machine.
I'll probably end up bolting a strip of black plastic to part of the webbing so that I can in turn bolt on some Carradice QR pannier clips.

I'm looking around for a new small bar bag. Similar to the Outer Shell Drawcord (basically something with a flap lid rather than a burrito with a zip). Any suggestions for other models to look at that may be more readily available in the UK?

Any recommendations for a handlebar bag for a camera with one lens attached. Mainly road with a bit of light gravel (it’ll be fitted to my Eddy Merckx road bike so nothing too extreme). Aim is safe transport to photogenic spots rather than rapid access, but probable that I will want to whip it out quickly sometimes, hence needing the lens attached rather than separate.
At the moment I use a Timbuk2 messenger with padded camera insert, which is fine but I worry that if I fall, i’ll do myself (and the camera) more damage than if it was on the bike.
Camera will be fairly small and light: Minolta X-700 with a 28-85mm, or Olympus OM-D EM5.2 with 12-40mm or a 75-300 (am toying with picking one up specifically for the deer rutting season)

What rear rack can people recommend for an arkose Ss? The one I have is far too wide, it’s a disc fit from boardman I think so am I right to think I need a non disc fit? Seems odd on a disc brake bike! Thanks

I use one of these when touring - Although I do not carry a DSLR, this is purported to be for cameras.

Not too large, not too expensive, some light internal padding, and can be removed and carried around. You may or may not like the QuickClick element of this. Not waterproof though although there is a rain cover that comes with it.

Cool. I’ll try and track one down to check if the camera fits
Thanks

Disc racks tend to be very wide, I guess this is from a time that the brake was outside of the rear triangle(?) and they needed to clear this. Some non-disc racks are also too narrow for the Arkose - made this mistake with a Tortec Velocity.
Tubus have handy diagrams for each rack. I've got the vega evo on my geared Arkose.

There are also photography based threads here too - you may get a different/better answer from one of those just for a second opinion.
At what point do bikepacking solutions cross into ‘just get some panniers (or a trunk bag)’ territory?
