  • That was the one I was thinking of! Many thanks

  • Sorry if I didn't make it clear, the flip lock that you attached is a combination of both, there's an Allen bolt which screws into the flip side.

The barrel nut is part of the hinge on the QR lever, with the Allen bolt on the opposite end, so yeah if you want 2 in 1, this would be it.

  • I'd like to switch between QR and hex bolt on a whim (e.g. hex bolt around town, QR offroad)

I have accidentally ended up with a shitty generic clamp on the tandem at the moment which would do this, swapped off a bike I bought for my dad from Evans. FWEvans house brand one used to be a pattern which would do both and they actually shipped it with both, but they seem to have changed pattern now. I'm sure aliexpress will be awash with similar devices if you can be arsed to trawl through all the ones which are not right 🙂

  • Randomly I've been cleaning up a Strider Classic balance bike I just bought.

That model doesn't have a QR stem clamp like the more expensive models.

I'm pretty certain it has a small semi circular washer to hold a round nut with a straight bolt.

I'll see if I can take a photo later.

I'm pretty certain it has a small semi circular washer to hold a round nut with a straight bolt. You'd then keep the round nut from your current QR.

I'll see if I can take a photo later. But I've tried to roughly mark it on your pic. You could try and find a piece like that, or worst case contact the company and mod it yourself.

Fizk do those seatpost keeper things. Although I think some neat self-amalgamating(?) tape trimmed with a craft knife is neater.

  • I was wrong it's the QR seatpost that has it as part of its clamp design.

Idk if you can make it out here, but if you can find a similar curved metal washer you should be able to mod it with your existing hardware.

  • At our bike shop we had someone verbally abuse our staff, be denied service, then walk out with an item from our shop while threatening to assault a team member (with a crankset in their hand). Police were called when guy refused to return our merch, and they said we should stop talking to the thief and shut the door, or they would hang up the phone (...). What’s the Law’s POV on detaining a thief? I’ve seen shoplifters detained at big chain supermarkets, usually in a headlock by one guy or by two guys one per arm, but those thieves just struggle without threatening violence or carrying a weapon. Also, is it worth requesting a review of the way the cop handled our call, or is it standard procedure to hang up on emergency callers when they can hear a shouting match and one party threatening the other? Worth mentioning the thief and his group were hanging out within eyesight for several minutes, and the cop said he would only pass on the info to the neighbourhood team or something similar (spoiler: no police showed up).

  • What is this? It was attached to the chain stay of an MTB I just purchased off eBay.

  • Ringle Anti Chainsuck Thing or a clone.

Edit: probably a clone, as the holes aren't right.

  • The filth are useless eh. I'd make a complaint.

Pop into the workshop and grab a larger weapon, breaker bar or long seatpost come to mind.

Im not suggesting you attack anyone, I'd probably stay well behind the counter. Wouldn't bother attempting to detain anyone with a weapon in hand.

Also, I've always wondered what the legal implications are for detaining someone. It's sort of expected by security people. What constitutes false imprisonment?

  • Unless you meant the keyboard? I think it's a Dell KB216, the worst keyboard I have ever used.

  • Dell KB216.

    Bingo

  • Looks about right. My initial reaction is that this is a pointless devise, but on a closer inspection it appears to have been put to the test on at least a couple of occasions.

  • It was pretty jarring, honestly. Thief was screaming he was going to hit me and trying to square up to me with the crankset in his dominant hand (his idiot gf was screaming too but at least was pushing him back). I started yelling back that he repaid our attempt at a favour by calling us ‘shits’ in a language he didn’t think I’d understand and was now stealing our stuff, without threatening him or even insulting him. I called 999, asked for police and didn’t notice when the cop picked up. It was then max. 10 seconds of back and forth with the thief, in front of like 12 other people, when I hear the cop say in my ear ‘if you don’t stop yelling I’m going to put the phone down on you.’ Guess everyone else is cool as a ducking cucumber when they call for police with someone threatening them with a weapon in the background?

    Edit for clarity

  • Once a shoplifter has made no attempt to pay, or left the store with an item, he/she can be detained by staff. If he is a brick shithouse then you may use such force as is reasonable to do it. REASONABLE!
With regard to the filth, they are a shower of shit. Report the crime and get a crime number then place a complaint re the handling of it. Gather any CCTV and tell them you have some. They'll be shit. Next time, if there is one, "he has something pointed" gets a better reaction especially if you hang up.

  • Thanks for that. “Reasonable“ it pretty tricky to define in the moment, as reasonable for the employee might not be reasonable to the bystander or a jurymember who wasn’t there. Plus, no item is worth getting slashed with a crankset. Best just to let the police deal with it.

    Oh wait...

  • “Reasonable“ it pretty tricky to define in the moment

The jury will take account of the short amount of time you had to consider the matter and the amount of stress you were under when determining the reasonableness of your action.

no item is worth getting slashed with a crankset

That's my view too - while you're allowed to defend your property, it's unlikely to be a wise use of your resources.

  • Reasonable for a pensioner to kick a teenaged villain in the nuts not the other way around.

  • Where is the film industry peeps thread please?

  • Anyone know what the new equivalent of the 3T Ergonovas are?

  • What’s the Law’s POV on detaining a thief?

If by 'Law' you mean the police, then IME it's generally 'CBA'. Donoughts.

  • “Reasonable“ it pretty tricky to define in the moment, as reasonable for the employee might not be reasonable to the bystander or a jurymember who wasn’t there.

Juries are almost invariably very sympathetic towards people who defend their own property. It really is only the Tony Martinesque outliers - shoot a thief in the back with a double-barrelled shotgun as he's running away - where they tend to lose sympathy. It'd be nice to think we could rely on the police to enforce law and order, but sadly that is no longer the case.

  • 3T Ernovas. Same bars, different name.
