The Midge I've fitted to this latest build were last used on a cross-check built up as a on and off road commuter. I love 'em for offering a range of positions but I don't think I use them as they're intended, having them low-ish and riding on the hoods in a bullhorn fashion the majority of the time and really only using the drop sections when it gets gnarly† when the wide stance is perfect.
I kinda imagine I'll be riding on the hoods a lot. I don't find it very easy getting my hands to the lever in the drops at the best of times, don't think I'd be wanting risk it off road.
Because of their shape, the levers can actually be positioned so you end with a kinda MTB-like setup when you're in the drops—easy to ride with a finger or two covering them—so it's worth experimenting.

† Gnarly for a middle-aged bloke with no bottle.
