it's such a lovely guitar, it's flawless - so glad i got it. i can totally imagine i'd sack it off if i went for something cheap and cheerful. not had to tune it once regardless of how much you lean on that bigsby.

I'm somewhat married to the maple fingerboard I think, gone past that stage of the build but I do love maple on Olympic white with mint pickguard...
There's also a little voice in the back of my mind that's been constantly coercing me toward Dakota Red for the last week or so...
Pics of your Sherwood too please...

Was all ready to reply with standard humbuckers, but then realised my wiring for series/parallel was a bit wrong. I've fixed it now, so can report that they're much louder when in series, less bright and it's almost like the whole frequency response shifts downwards.
The effect seems to be pretty much the same with single coils, so should be similar for firebirds too. Have never used them, so not sure what their characteristics are and whether a bass-wards shift is a good thing.
I just saw this, did you re-wire a guitar to try this? Holy crap! Useful results, thanks.
The firebirds are supposedly quite trebly for humbuckers, so hopefully it’ll retain a useable tone.

Mandolins. Anyone wise? I’ve decided to buy in, plus get a cheaper one for my daughter, so we can learn together during late autumn/through winter.
Hobgoblin came straight to mind - seems like they sell Ashbury as their main. Any experience of these? Barnes and Mullins is another that’s appearing a lot?
Web reading generally says to just up the budget to a Kentucky or Eastman, but not sure if that’s the usual “buy above budget” chatter. Don’t mind stretching to one of the lower end ones of those

Oh yes - wasn't suggesting changing your design or anything, it's probably just because I've kind of want an only white p with a maple fingerboard! Can't really justify it though.
Here's my Sherwood green metallic P;

Don’t know owt about Mandolins but I recently bought a relatively basic Eastman guitar and it is a fab instrument. Beautifully put together and sounds terrific.

On a similar mission at the moment myself - the guy who runs mandolessons.com (amazing resource) recommends the Kentucky km150 - I think whatever instrument you get, setup is going to be key. Currently learning on a beaten up old harmony - combination of tiny/ worn frets and high action is very off putting !

^^ Love that bass rig man. God I wish I still had my 50s RI P-Bass. Black with gold anodized guard. Lovely thing.
What's the tweed amp?

Can't help with Mandolins other than to say that can't recommend the cheap Fender electric one. Finger-shredding bastard.

Cheers - the cabs are SO good; really mellow & vintage sounding when played lightly but if you start to drive them they can have a real aggressive tone (handy as I was in a heavy band when I bought them).
It's a blues junior (guitar amp) - far too nice for my woeful guitar playing skills but I find I'm more likely to try to play guitar if the amp sounds nice & my old amp was horribly cheap sounding.

It's a great looking setup dude.

I got a USA Fender Strat a while ago, and kicking about in the strings n’ things which came in the case were some pickups.
Anybody know if these are the original pickups for the Strat, or if they are they the Fender Hot Noiseless ones as packaged? There seems to be a number on the back, but I’ve no idea what it’s referring to.

Doubtful, Fender Noiseless pickups have the word ‘Noiseless’ embossed on the cover:
What do the fitted pickups look like?

And we have a winner! To be honest, I just play the guitar, never examined it.
So, I’m guessing that the pickups in the box are the original ones? I think I might need to do some digging to see what came with the guitar.

I think that’ll be right. They look like standard Strat pickups, so they almost certainly came fitted. You could try swapping them back, you might prefer them - the Noiseless pickups are supposed to be good, but not quite the classic Strat single-coil sound.

Oh, I just play the guitar, it sounds fine to me. And changing the pickups is a daunting prospect. Never done anything like that before. They’ll just be heading back into the hard case.

Ha, didn't rewire just to answer your question, I went for full Jimmy Page wiring when I gutted my old Epiphone a couple of years ago. A push-pull pot switches series parallel and others for single coil/HB.
But I did then realise one permutation wasn't working, so surreptitiously rewired it while also on a work Zoom. Just had to keep the soldering iron out of shot.

I THINK I have one of these in my Jaguar Spare Parts box. Want me to have a dig around?
