Follow up question - what to wrap the stanchions with to prevent 1,000 miles of 130kph flying insect impact?

You could let all the air out of the fork and compress it to cover the stanchions, then strap it down

This would also reduce the wheelbase and, by steepening the headangle, increase the effect of reversing the fork.
