  • Thanks Oliver. I reckon I'm going to end up with a hybrid route after all the help here.

    Ta everyone, much 'preciated.

  • Whahey, I did it yesterday.

Thanks for the routing advice everyone, I've never ridden through so many pretty villages in one day. After a few more East London explorations earlier in the week I finally worked out a route that was straighter but hillier to link up with Mr 7ven's lovely Cambridge route but starting nr Epping.

69.6 miles up, met up with a mate for a chinwag, then train back to KingsX, then ride back to Dartford. 92.2 miles in one day Fixed on Scobswell, thats a PB for me. Double whahey.

    Thanks everyone.

  • that's awesome work dude. sounds like you had a great ride.

and this thread has been really useful for me so I can explore alternatives to my usual route to Cambridge

  • Thank you, it was fun. Hard work but fun. I cried-off a 60 miler with a chum tomorrow. I'm tired!

  • Planning to ride London to Cambridge and back tomorrow morning. If anyone here is interested, I would love some company.
Rough schedule- leave from Victoria Park around 7.15am. Easy paced around 3.5-4 hours to Cambridge, grab a quick bite there and head back to London. Anyone interested in joining, just drop me a message.

  • Anyone already got a route file that takes the canal paths up to Roydon and then on to Cambridge? (thus avoiding the A104)

What are those paths like to ride in general?

  • they are fine to ride in general and I have used them a few times - London to Roydon bit that is. can be pretty busy at weekends with joggers, families, dog walkers, etc. so not cool if you want to blast along. this time of year will be less busy. if going in the week you will find it pretty quiet.

my normal London to Cambridge route goes via Roydon when on road so can send you a .tcx if file if you like as you can pick it up from there. it's not that interesting. but riding from London to Cambridge isn't really. nice little ride all the same

  • I've got this and it was fine I think (was a while ago!): https://ridewithgps.com/routes/19903774

I remember I was hungover, and the paths weren't too boneshaking! Quite a lot of them are on streetview interestingly, so you can see what they're like.

  • Thanks! (and @jonny ). Sounds like it's going to work nicely.

Extremely n00b question - if I download the route onto a Wahoo, and pick it up in Tottenham Hale, will it just snap to the route?

  • May as well also ask here: where’s a good place for lunch in or on the way into Cambridge - to sit outside under a heater with bike in view, or somewhere that allows you to stash bikes securely - not gonna have a lock...

  • You can take your bike inside at the Espresso Library on the edge of parkers piece. The Maypole pub has a large heated outside area and is also very cyclist friendly

  • Did this ride today with @Bezzin . Route was really good, but the canal path was mega sketchy in places, particularly approaching Roydon. Huge flooded potholes - place looked like it had been shelled.

Stopped at the Queens Head in Newton for a pint and sandwich. Proper institution of a place. Much recommend.

  • Anyone got a route I can nab that goes from Cambridge > London - not on the canal path - decided I didn't like that. Same route out of Cambridge, but then back in through Epping...

  • Edit: I'll send you a PM

Does that work? I can get a gpx of it from my laptop later.

Most if it was nice rolling country roads. A charity ride if I remember rightly
