• Afternoon all, looking at trying to build my own wheels. I'm trying to fix an old peugeot in the chespest way i can. Can't find any cheap second hand wheels for the life of me. Is there a guide anywhere about how to build wheels and also what parts i need? Can you build a flip flop hub wheel?

How you getting on? This thread might be a long read. Sheldon Brown is a free place to look for some info. Sounds like you want to build a fixed or single wheelset.

Essentially you'll need: (and maybe these suggested cheap but OK ones in brackets)

    Spokes (Alpina)
    Nipples (usually come with spokes)
Rims (ADHN or Sputnik for heavy duty)
Pair of track hubs with sealed bearings (look at Formula, Novotec, Ambrosio Zenith, SJS, Condor, Sturmey Archer - these are all much of a muchness)
A wheel jig (there are some cheap ones around, plenty of people here make them from ply and stuff if you're handy)
    or
A frame & fork to use as a makeshift jig, with some bits of gaffer tape to create some guages
A spoke key that fits the nipples ('Spokey' red probably)
    Some boiled linseed oil
    Lots of time and patience.

  • linseed oil

I concur with the rest of your post, but I've never felt the need to engage the services of Linsey Doyle when building wheels.
