As @lynx so accurately predicted, the roof motor on the z4 has given up the ghost. I instantly rang the guy he recommended in Bristol, who recommended in turn a much nearer friend of his in Hook. Said guy is fixing and repositioning the motor in the boot for the princely sum of £200 inc VAT. Apparently this takes about 2 hours. An excuse for a drive across Sussex and Hants is welcome as it will include a pub lunch in one of my favourite boozers, in Longparish about 10 miles from Hook. Thanks again, Lynx!
