  • You're right. I missed that. I'm still not sure I see the point. It takes up loads more kitchen space than a bag of beans too. It's not even enough tubes to separate out a 250 gram bag for espresso let alone filter.

  • I'm curious as to the problem that it's solving. I mean if it's just an aesthetic thing then fair enough, it's personal preference.

  • Did you get your mc2 fixed?

Mine has finally died - motor spat out a load of bits, was wondering if you still needed the controller board?

  • Today we're having Darkwoods Coffee's Good Morning Sunshine!

  • I’m still waiting on a new board. It’s on order but with covid there is literally no timescale. I’ve resorted back to putting my drill on the end of my hario as my patience for morning grinding wanes!

If you could be bothered pulling the board out and posting it I definitely wouldn’t say no!

Made a lovely affogato yesterday tho.

  • Have pulled the board already as it made getting the motor out easier.

Think I will use it as a chance to upgrade as motor is £50 plus postage anyway, so will have spare hopper etc available - everything bar the motor.

  • It really struck me as something very particular that someone desired, had made to spec, rather than a price, and then is selling the rest of minimum tooling requirement quantities of etc. Is otherwise as you say - v. esoteric.

  • Two goes in Puly Caff and boiling water, a scrub with tartaric acid/vinegar paste and a five minute boil in a vinegar solution and we have this! Not bad, still a bit dull but don't think I can do much better without a buffing wheel...

There's still some aluminium oxide on the inside, what's the easiest way to get rid of that, aside from scrubbing? No more scrubbing please... 🥵

  • Have you tried polishing with toothpaste on a small part to see if that works?

It's very good for lifting silver oxide from silver and tarnish from pewter, maybe will do a job on alu too?

  • So I've got a 4 month old baby and not surprisingly the sleep deprivation was killing me, coffee and booze consumption had also risen dramatically during the lockdown, so I had a month off booze and caffeine to try and reset my brain and try to find a new baseline and thankfully it worked great.

Went I to my local cornershop the other day and was surprised to see wholebean coffee in there, so thought I'd give it a try. It was London fields espresso blend but by god it is so awful, like bitter ashtray water. I feel like I've been punished for cheating on yellow bourbon, lesson learned order made.

  • Anyone after a single espresso cup?

Came in my secret 🎅 and I have no use for it.

    Pick up from New Cross

  • I'll give it a go, annoying there isn't a nice easy fix... I'm not go full Campag seatpost on it, that guy's dead... 🙃

  • Still loving that machine... The guy at my local roastery gives me shit every time I go in and eyeball their machines, one of these days I'm just gonna snap and get the credit card out... So, so spendy tho'... 🤑

  • I've been having decaf in the afternoons on my doctor's recommendation. Hasbean's Colombian offering was a bit muted and wishy washy so I'm trying Monmouth and their Ethiopian beans next. Anyone managed to order anything that successfully fooled their taste buds?

  • So I'm trying a new coffee for my Robot-espresso and finding it too lightly roasted for my taste buds. It also has no Robusta (yeah I'm like that) so that will affect the flavour too, on top of the myriad variables. Grind finer?

  • I love Monmouth's decaf, so tasty... I've fooled many a coffee snob with it...

  • I cannot for the life of me get a crema out of the ROK presso.
I've ground finer, slower pulls, longer "infusion" before pulling, etc.

Is there a trick to it?

  • How fresh are your beans? Do you grind yourself?

  • I'd also go with old beans. Low temp and low pressure can contribute, but in my experience it's down to the beans being a good few weeks old.

  • Beans are delivered every month from Coffee Factory, usually used within 1-4 weeks of roasting.
Ground immediately before use in a Ascaso i-Mini espresso grinder.

I'm still faffing about with the grind settings, been too fine and too coarse.

Current setup is a nice enough coffee, but it doesn't seem thick enough for espresso nor does it have the foamy top I dream of.

  • Glad I have that coming tomorrow then! For some reason almost everyone's decaf offering seems to be either Colombian or Brazilian. Nothing against either of those origins (although I've struggled to find Brazilian coffee I really enjoy as I feel like it's usually heavy on chocolatey/walnut type flavours that I'm not into) but it was a nice surprise to see an Ethiopian option.

  • ^ Cool, report back on that please! I've been looking for a good decaf as well.
