  • Mid-late Oct so should be able to head west at some point, appreciate the offer. Will send you a message later :)

  • I'm also in Fitzrovia (when I bother to show up at the office). If you let me know I could bring some shit in one lunchtime and show you 'stuff'.

  • just buy an etrex 20 for £90 secondhand, load up some OSM maps for free, job done.

  • Looking to replace my garmin 800 if anyone has for sale here. Keep getting mugged on eBay

  • anyone getting rid of their garmin watch? Swim hrm compatable
    fenix 3 would be ideal

  • any recommendations as to what to do with a majorly cracked 1030 screen? touch screen still functions but am worried about spreading/waterproofing.

  • I'd try getting it replaced sooner rather than later. Speak to Garmin and see what they can do.

  • So I spaffed on the Edge Explore. Have got the app and worked out how to import a ride file but not how to replace the garmin maps with the osm ones.
Interface reminds me of the later flip phones :)
Glad I went for it, shitty weather in London this weekend reminding to take every advantage I can get.

  • Just place the. Img file directly in the garmin folder. Use a unique name as opposed to the default gmapsupp. Img. You can have numerous map files and enable and disable as required

  • Success! Many thanks

  • Is there a way to skip Garmin Express installation and directly download the updated maps? Installing via Express and the etrex slow ass connection is silly when I could download the whole lot and dump straight to SD in 5min.

  • As you say just dump them in the garmin folder, much quicker with the card in a reader. When the thing reboots it should find the new map.

  • Yeah, that works for OSM etc. but I'm talking about the proper Garmin updates. Looks like they can only be downloaded via their stupid Express app. It also appears I have an issue with the etrex or the card because it took about 10 goes before it started and then it failed half way through.

  • Does anyone know how to edit .fit files?

  • They're not really editable.

https://www.fitfiletools.com/#/top can fix some stuff for you such as removing obvious power spikes, etc.

Otherwise use a tool to convert .fit to .tcx (or .gpx) and then you can edit the XML to your heart's content.

Converting back to a .fit file isn't well handled at the moment so .git -> .tcx -> .fit may/will lose a bunch of info, but general power/location/time/cadence/HR/etc stuff should survive.

What do you want to change?

  • I'm struggling with bluetooth at the moment - I want to see if I can hack the settings file and not have to hard reset

  • Ah, no, doubt anything can help.

.fit is a self describing binary file format. It's really not edit friendly.

I've written my own code to dump .fit output, but nothing to go the other way.

  • I m a etrex 30 (not 30x) user, dumb user.
    Please help me.
I am able to load, import, export routes from komoot but when I try to post my rides on Strava I can only upload the route (gpx) I have done with komoot, not the actual ride of the pre-planned route.

I do save my ride when I finish and change the name but no way to find if I plug the etrex or I plug only the microsd.

    any help?

    Thanks

  • Looks for the track on the etrex

E:\Garmin\GPX\Current on a 30x, I can't remember what my HCx had it. But look for similar path I guess.

  • Thanks @hippy,
unfortunately, when I plug in the microSD I can't find any of the current track I did.
More precisely, I see the saved track on my etrex 30 which I can save or archive but anything appears on the computer.
    see my screenshot.

The folder GPX you see on the screenshot is where I store/download the route I plan with komoot.

  • Anything in Activities? That's where an Edge unit would save fit files.

Do you have it set to store to the SD card or to the device itself? It might be on the device, if it's not on the SD card. You need a mini USB to plug in the etrex directly to the PC.

  • No, activities is empty.

Perhaps, I am missing the bit where I had to save the files on the SD. How to do that?

My etrex is not recognized via usb cable , even when I plug with my Mac which has garmin express and base camp.

  • You can choose to save activities to the device or the micro sd card, additionally you can choose to save as gpx, fit or both IIRC

  • Thanks.
    How to do that?
    I can’t find on system/setup

  • Not having the device with me but I think it is in profiles.
