No bother
Have you decided on what your doing with the paint yet?
-
• #29
No - mostly just lurking in the paint section on here. Other (more 'life' critical) bike issues have come to pass -
Wife's Raleigh Mixte weinmann's were knackered beyond - no idea how she didn't die already. Ordered - ALL the Tektros - none fit in combo with the cromoplastics / 27 1/4 wheels and 32's she was running. So a 700c wheelset is on its way and I bloody hope that works.
So she's on my 90's Marin dadmachine - which is fine because the 5yr old doesn't need a lift anymore and is now riding himself to school. Me along side on my last bike standing - which at the moment is the weirdest beast I own (Dahon Hammerhead) with a shot front wheel bearing and split rear tyre.
So fix workhorses first deal with the 'dean' second really.

Had same issues with my better half's Dawes that has old spec narrow canti studs.
Only modern brakes (canti or vee) I found that fit, and worked, were Shimano BR-CX50 that come with the different sized pad spacers.

not the wheels i was thinking but err?

worth a bid
You can always flog them if they don't look good.
I reckon they would suit the HAWT PNK paint idea though.....

Wifebiek fixed up nice. Marin Stinson re-style as-1x on trend-retro-functional workhorse underway. This thanks to a bloody nice chap from Suffolk who personally delivered a set of Deore LX cranks to me about 14hrs after i bought them.
So time to think about that colour some more....
Pearl Opal Green -Kinda classy - maybe
Pearl Maus grey - Boring but stylish
Rasberry Red - Probably the one...Probably Aurum Finishing for powder and won't bother about period resto decals. Bieks for riding innit.

Is the bike finished yet? What colour did you go for in the end?

Funny you should ask that....recently decided to change tack and head in a road-rat direction.
Got some ultegra mechs inbound - on the hunt for mostly everything else now ;-) -

Hi - Just bought a Nigel Dean Senator needing work - would you have more of the catalogue than you put up on site - specs in particular. The front wheel is a Rigida Aero with black rim, perhaps the same as the brochure cover - and I need to replace the hub - if there was a name and spec it would be helpful! Regards

Hi - I bought a Senator with v dodgy hubs on Rigida Aero rims in black (like the catalogue cover pic?) - if you have similar wheels it would be a great help to know what the hubs are! Regards

Sorry - I never check this - here's the spec from the 1991 catalog - Suntour GPX apparently .

Thank you! Found a new rear and decent used front GPX hub - only the wheels to rebuild now (aargh).

Big fan of ND frames. And hot pink PC for cheapz are you're good to go. And "apparently" a few of the early (when he was starting up) NDs were made by Condor and these can be identified by cut out lugs. I don't know if it's true or not but that's what I've heard. And for £54 you have a bargain I think.
Subbed.

Hi - Did the '91 catalogue give prices - wondering if the Tourmaster was more or less than the Senator? Was 531C more or less pricey than 531ST? Were they both double-butted?
Any idea what 'microfusion lugs' and 'integral Fork Crown' are? (excuse my ignorance!)
I read the Suntour GPX was only made '89 to '91, and the wheels on mine are Rigida rather than Alesa, perhaps the spec changed, and wondering if mine is an '89 or a '90 - as apparently the GPX indexing was said to have problems early on but sorted by 1990?
My Senator is GPX throughout - including the pedals (with special Lyotard clips) - I read the downside is bits are hard to find and not interchangeable with other eg Shimano bits.
I read that Nigel Dean made frames for Condor, rather than the other way around? -

No prices on the catalogue but I’ll post a link to the full pdf tomorrowIf I can. No idea about the difference between 531c and st -no doubt others on here will know. I just read both these models as being the highest spec in their respective disciplines. Microfusion lugs - Italian (?) cast lugs - rather than pressed( I gather) - a technical development for efficiency and cost rather than performance - integral fork crown would appear to be a sleek/hidden joint between fork blades and the Steerer tube. I.e. no visible lugged crown. Looks more modern / aero.

Thank you, that's very helpful. What did u build yours up with in the end, Ultegra?
-
• #45
No worries - I’m furlough with possible redundancy- so can’t be spending on this at the moment. much as I want to ride the heck out of it. If and when I can get it done it will be a mixed bag. I have Ultegra 6700 mechs a sora chainset and 105 pedals. All from good peeps on here. I’m scouting for cheap 2x9 shifters + hollowtech bb - This will all be rolling on super basic rigida/Quando Hoops as a start.

Sorry to hear your work situation. Sounds like a good start as a combo. I won't actually see mine for a month as I'm away, but the Suntour GPX sounds very promising - if it works - everything to hubs and pedals are GPX - and I was lucky to find a new rear hub for £4 and a good front one for £10 - otherwise pairs advertised up to £160 as NOS. It's 7 speed so I guess an 8 speed would be feasible, and I read that a later slimline 9s chain makes a lot of difference to the indexing operation.

The thing I am not looking forward to is rebuilding the back wheel to replace the hub - do you think there might be someone on here who could help with rebuilding - as I haven't done it before?!

Have you seen the ND Facebook page:https://www.facebook.com/groups/459450187986242/about

No but thanks - all I know about Dean is he had a shop in St Albans at some point. Also some story about him taking a dump in a bidon/hat ! Bit of a character apparently-bikes were brazed in the Barton on Humber works at one point I think.
Also - plenty of people on here build wheels and I’m sure there’s a thread for tips and advice.
I’ve made a couple very modest forum based impulse bargain buys for this bike. A tange headset Miche post and Tiagra shifters - so it will be a right ol muddle but might be riding it this year at least.

Update : This is on. Frame is with my brother to take it for powder - a lovely ride down to the Heath from the suburbs. Cold and grey but with a certain stillness you get at this time of year on a Sunday afternoon. We did a distanced hand over and had a walk and a catch up. Cycling back across parliament hill in the gloaming with the city lights on my left was a bit spesh. Miss the city.
Easton ea70 wheelset dibs from a good member of this parish.
Mostly all other bits have come from here too - I’ll do a round up of thanks when built.
The single colour powder eschews traditional Neo retro approach I know but As much as I like the dean graphics I’m not so bothered. The aim is modern(ish) steel road bike to get me into road riding for less money than a modern entry level alternative.
The group set is bit of a mish mash.6700 mechs
Tiagra levers (9 x 2) and brakes
105 pedals and chain
Sora chainset which I’m planning to strip and polish.
Miche silver / black aero seat post
Compact bend nittos and noname 26 quill stem, black tape.
GP 4000sNow indecision about colour. On the fence about the hot pink although neo retros are probs best with a bright frame, thinking about a deep blue that works with the black wheels gunmetal group set and silver chainset at the same time. where’s my RALZ at ....?
Probably
and unless you want a triple this 6500 is on for £130.
